Is there any way to tax the car now without having to wait for the log book to come back? The log book hasn't even been sent off yet?

You can't tax it if you don't own it. And until the logbook is signed over and processed, you don't really legally own it.

Just carry some proof in the car that you've recently bought it and no Garda will give you much bother.

    Wrong.

You are the legal owner the moment you purchase the car. You are also the registered owner from the moment you sign the change of ownership. From that moment on the car is your responsibility even if the change hasn't been processed.

You can tax the car no problem with out any registration documents, you do not have to wait. All you need are the chassis number, registration number, colour, make and model for the Tax form and the money.

    http://www.environ.ie/en/LocalGovernment/MotorTax/Renewal/
Renewing motor tax where there is:
a change in ownership, following completion/dispatch of the relevant change in ownership form, viz. RF200 (pre 1993 vehicles), vehicle licensing certificate (post 1993 vehicles) or vehicle registration certificate (post May 2004 vehicles)

The following are required to renew motor tax in these circumstances:
    • Tax renewal Form RF100A available from Motor Tax Offices, Public Libraries and Garda Stations.
    • Appropriate fee
    • A certificate of roadworthiness /pass statement issued by an authorised tester for all goods vehicles/buses/coaches/ambulances one year old or over. Goods trailers having a design gross vehicle weight exceeding 3,500 kgs, one year old or over.
    • A weight docket from an authorised weightbridge (only applies to a new owner of a goods vehicle)
    • A goods declaration Form RF111a, available from Motor Tax Office (only applies to a light goods vehicle whose unladen weight does not exceed 1524 kg )
    • PSV licence (only applies to small andlarge public service vehicles)
Article 60 licence (only applies to school buses)
    • A certificate of approval from the Revenue Commissioners for a disabled driver/passenger (only applies to an exempt vehicle)

Ive a similar problem, no logbook for car the missus just bought(old car a friend was no longer using...). If we just go to our local tax office we can tax it and they'll change over the ownership? Surely you need some consent from the previous owner?

    Happy days if they dont...:)

yeah they will need the log book, your friend will have to report his lost and fill out the forms and send them away to shannon to get a new one, then you can bring that into the motor tax office to change ownership

I tried to Tax my gf's car on Tuesday with the RF100 and the lady at the counter turned us away because the car was not in her name yet? It's been a month now since she bought it and dealer says he has sent of the change of ownership details. Why would they not tax it so? We were waiting over an hour in that bloody nutgrove office!.

The lady at the counter stamped our rf100 form saying to come back in 6 days and try again!

mondeo, ring the dealer again and ask if he sent the change of ownership form by registered post, and if he has get the tracking number off him and track it on the An Post website to see whether it's gotten to Shannon yet! If it has, ring Shannon and tell them how long ago it was sent and ask why it hasn't been processed yet. If they tell you they haven't received it yet you can point to the An Post registered post saying it was delivered and I bet they'll backtrack verrrrrrry quickly! If it wasn't sent by registered post, try ringing Shannon anyway and asking if it's been received at all yet and explain how long you've been waiting, should help to get things moving!

The dealer just entered her details onto the computer and said the change if ownership is done online. She didn't have to sign anything..

I could be wrong but the previous owner and the buyer are both supposed to sign the change of ownership form which is then sent to Shannon, and then once processed the logbook is sent back to the new owner! That's what happened for me anyway, bought my first car last month from a dealer. I'd ring up Shannon and ask if the dealer's done it the right way or if more needs doing!

i got the log book back after two days!

Well as far as I know the logbook is also the Vehicle Registration Certificate, that's what it says on mine, and therefore the car is in your name!

I dont know, I thought you cannot tax it until the logbook comes back. The motor tax office cant do a change of ownership for the VLC form,Shannon has to do that. Only they can change the old style brown logbook

Ah sure don't worry, I'm sure there are lots of folk who fill out forms without paying any attention whatsoever to what info it wants. :D

Shannon should send you back a new log book within days so it shouldn't really make much difference either way

    http://www.citizensinformation.ie/en/travel_and_recreation/motoring_1/buying_or_selling_a_vehicle/change_of_ownership.html

Right now i've been waiting a month for the logbook back on a new bike. Last one i bought took 10 days.
