Hi there, I am just trying to find a statistic that was recently quoted by a Fine Gael TD and probably loads of other people in the media. I'm not having an luck finding it.

Anyway it basically describes how when each person who gets a job , they reduce the governmwents social welfare payments and then increase tax revenue for the government.

Thanks in advance if anyone knows and can find what I am on about.

I'm a little unsure as to what you mean.

Naturally someone who comes off welfare and gets a job will stop being a net drain to the state and start being a net contributor.

Employment statistics can be found on the CSO:

    - For the official measure of unemployment you need to consult the Quarterly National Household Survey (QNHS)

    - If you want an up-to-date number of people on the Live Register then check out the Live Register also on the CSO (no of people on the LR does NOT equal the number of people unemployed though)

I am sure that did not answer your query but if you can elaborate more then let me know.

IIRC, each person on the dole costs the government €20k between social welfare payments, admin and so on (although they will of course be paying some tax in VAT)

If they're earning an independant wage, this €20k is saved as well as whatever additional taxes (such as income tax) they pay.

That is of course if they are not employed by the public sector, in which case they will cost alot more than 20k (....heads for the door)
