    ...and full version is €300!

From what I have seen so far, its a great piece of software. However, has anyone got any suggestions for any alternatives to lightroom before buying full version?

I know its a newbie question but I've only recently got back into photography and look to see if anyone has any recommendations.

Ive actually never used photoshop so might have a look at that before deciding on anything.

    Cheers,
    Sean

Buy Lightroom from Amazon.co.uk. It works out cheaper.

I've never used Lightroom, but I'm finding that PhotoShop Elements 9 more than meets my limited post-processing requirements. It's about €100, and a good introduction to PhotoShop.

I'm going back to college part-time in sept and will be using the student card to get photoshop student edition for 182€. Do you know a student / teacher who can buy it for you?

Aperture? Iphoto? Both for Mac, no idea what's out there for PC. Lightroom is my program of choice used with Photoshop. photoshop on it's own may be more powerful for pixel editing, but Lightroom does all sorts of great cataloging the needs to be done manually in photoshop.

    I use both :)

I have tried Lightroom & also ACDsee Pro, which is a bit cheaper.

Both are good, but I prefer the ACDsee pro approach to file management.

However - For now I simply use Picasa for jpegs & if I shoot something decent I will process it with Raw Therapee ( Free raw processor) .

Id recommend that they are worth a try at least, they may suit what you need & you'll save a few euro to boot...

Elements 9 for Mac and PC comes with an Organizer as well. A little known fact about this software is that it's a cut-down version of the Library in Lightroom. Organizer then uses Adobe Camera Raw as the Develop Module. Catalogs created with Elements Organizer can be converted to Lightroom Catalogs if you upgrade later.

Elements 9 is around €95 here in Ireland

    Hope this helps,

    Dave

Raw Therapee as suggested above, and Gimp. You then have a completely free photo editing workflow for yourself.

For simpler editing, paint.net is excellent. Supports layers and has tonnes of plugins available.

Here's the plugin index for it:

I don't think anyone could argue there isn't enough in that package for some decent photo manipulation (including a RAW support plugin).

Its no Photoshop, but its pretty decent.
