B5 Passat - Auto Gearbox Query

    So I've been looking out for an older (very cheap) auto diesel at the minute and the other day I came across a 00-reg B5 1.9TDI Passat that would have suited the bill perfectly.

    Good bodywork, driving well BUT the reverse gear is knackered - 9 times out of 10 the reverse lights come on but it won't engage. In fairness to the seller he was very upfront about this on the phone and has been told it could just be a rod/cable that needs changing....... or presumably it could also need a whole new gearbox!!

    The problem is that I wouldn't be wanting to pay much more than a grand for this as the idea is to save money by replacing a small 1.3L petrol car that's costing a fortune on a daily 80-odd km motorway commute and if a replacement at that price even lasted a year it'd have paid for itself twice! :)

    The other problem is diesel auto's in the sub-2L bracket and of that vintage are now hard to come by - thank you government scrappage scheme! HAS to be diesel AND auto for the requirements and preferably a saloon - hence the Passat

    So, how much would a new gearbox cost if it came to it, or would I be totally mad even considering it (probably but thought I'd ask anyway) :)
