Mates got a 00 focus and last time he went to NCT test it was Jan 2009 and it expired on May 2009 as due to working abroad lay up for about 18/19 months or so hence why only getting such a short test, what a rip off...
He has not been tested since it expired then......
Hes coming home shortly so what the story regarding the NCT now

I would say wait til after may 2011 to get a full 2 year test. In normal circumstances, you can go for test 3 months early and get 2 years & 3 months test. Not sure what will happen if you go in early having no current test though - might only get up to may this year.

if he goes in after may 2011 he will only get 1 year as the new rule kicks in on the first of june for cars 10 years or older.. So if I was he I'd be booking it a day after the first registration ie, if it is the 21st of May is the due date I'd book it in for the 22nd, giving him 7/8 days to fix any issues if there is a problem for a retest,.
