Go to control panel, then language, then choose German.
Though you have to remember the keys where is which.

If you need umlauts only occasionaly you open MS-Word, click above Insert, then Symbol, choose the umlaut you wish and create your own shortcut (i.e for ä choose strg and a). You then can use the shortcut in almost any form.

The latter is handier for occasional use.

Assuming you're using Microsoft. Has nothing to do with Dell or eircom.

Using the ALT key. That is the on the left hand side. NOT the AltGr key.
AND the numerical pad. Green number light should be on.

    ä: Alt + Num. Block 132 ä
    Ä: Alt + Num. Block 142 Ä

    ö: Alt + Num. Block 148 ö
    Ö Alt + Num. Block 153 Ö

    ü: Alt + Num- Block 129 ü
    Ü: Alt + Num- Block 154 Ü

    ß: Alt + Num. Block 225 ß
