    Hi all,

I damaged my sump recently by driving over something - it leaked oil that I wasnt aware of and now the engine overheated and isnt right - does the insurance cover this by any chance?

    nope
Insurance covers accidents etc, not mechanical failure

What company and cover do you have?

Surely the cause of this problem was an accident?

Yes some insurance companies will cover this type of damage, give em a bell..

It's the same as hitting a wall really if you have comp cover, they'll need to verify the sump was accident damaged though rather than a mechanical failure. Also they may well just cover the cost of a new sump, the car subseqently overheating (or being oil starved) and any damage caused by that may well be seen as driver ignorance/negligence.

    Thanks for all the replies..

yeah that's my worry - will they say its my own fault?.
Company is Quinn.. and fully comp insurance.

so Can I just ring them?. I dont want to say something wrong that will make it null and void for cover if you know what I mean.

So I be saying the damage was done there and then or that I'm not sure!

If you hit something and the car is damaged comp cover covers it. The OP claims he drove over something that damaged the sump, if he can prove that it may well be covered by insurance.

A clutch wearing out is no way along the same lines.

+1. The only thing I can see being an issue is that the insurer might argue contributory negligence - ie that the insured should reasonably have noticed a slow oil leak before it resulted in a seized engine.

My uncle hit water in autumn 2009 and it got into the engine. His insurance covered him for a brand new engine and it didn't affect his no claims.

so I guess what we're saying here is that they have to cover the damage really (i.e the sump) but not necessarily a new engine. fingers crossed.

A mate of mine did the same thing a few years back but it did affect his NCD.

How long after the sump getting a slap did the engine die? In time and mileage :)
