I have a Bank of Ireland student account with an overdraft, three times this year I have received bank charges of almost €40. I was of the impression that of charges existed on a student account, can anyone shed some light on this issue?

I have a BOI student account with no over draft and I've never had charges, so it's most likely the overdraft causing the problem. Charges are listed here:
    http://roi.mystudentbank.com/fs/doc/wysiwyg/Thrird%20Level%20Current%20Account(1).pdf

There was also something listed on the site about the student account giving 9 months of no overdraft charges, has the overdraft been longer than 9 months?

Edit: here's the something I meant:
    Grant Advance Overdraft
Just need a little something to tide you over? Apply for an overdraft2 on your 3rd Level Student Current Account while you wait for your grant money to come through.

    No interest for 9 months
    Interest surcharges may apply
I think they mean that it only really works in your favour if you pay it back as soon as your grant comes through.

Day to day banking is free from transaction charges. I'd +1 Offy that it's the overdraft attracting the fees.

I am livid today. Absolutely boiling mad. I applied for a grant advance overdraft two weeks ago. While my account is with Maynooth, I live in Carlow and filled out the forms with them on Friday two weeks ago. They were sent off and as I was in Maynooth the following Wednesday, I decided to pop into the branch to see what was happening; I used to get a grant advance in two days of applying. I was told that the forms didn't get there. Went back to Carlow, the girl I was dealing was was not pleased as she HAD sent the forms on the Friday I signed. Got a call on the same day saying that the forms WERE there, they were upgrading my account to 3rd level and then nothing. Rang them this Wednesday and I was told that I need an indemnifier for it....never been asked for a guarantor for an overdraft facility before. Neither my mother or my brother is with Bank of Ireland. I thought my Mom was and only found out when she was in the bank with me to sign the damn form that she's with TSB. I desperately need the money and this is dragging on and on and on and on. Why in God's name an overdraft needs an indemnifier is beyond me. My blood is boiling. This is taking forever. Has anyone else had this experience?

An overdraft is a sort of loan, and on a studnet account they insist on indeminity on ALL loans these days. You wont be earning regularly so they need to be sure they can claw the money back from somewhere.

I applied for an overdraft with AIB and it took 4 weeks to come in. I needed a guarantor for it because of the amount so I put down my mother. After about 3 weeks they said if I lowered the amount to where I didn't need a guarantor, it might go down quicker. So I went into the bank the following day and filled out another application and got accepted after a couple of days. Still took a couple of days after I had been approved until I could take the money out though.

I got an instant approved standard €650 overdraft with Ulster Bank for being a student. No-one had to sign anything except me.
