My mum is staying at my house at the census night, so her details needs to be filled in.
    Anyway. Q4 - relationship to person 1,2,3
    I'm person 1. My wife - person 2. My daughter - person 3.

So my mum is person 4.
What should be the answers in Q4.
She is a mother to me (person 1). She is grandmother to my daugher (person 3).
But there is no option for mother in law, which she is to my wife (person 2).
Surprisingly there is a field for son/daughter-in-law. I can't understand why there is none for mother-in-law.

Now I'm not really sure what should be the answer. There's two options. "Other related" or "Unrelated".
Is mother-in-law unrelated to my wife, or is she related?

It's the relationship to you, so Q4 should be "Mother or Father" not the relationship to your wife who is person 2

    No.
Person 4 has to describe relationship in Q4 to person 1, person 2 and person 3.
For me (person 1) it's as you said "Mother or Father".
To person 3 (my daughter) it's "Grandparent".
But what about relationship to person 2 (my wife)?

Unrelated (technically) as far as I can see

According to the image of the question on census.ie, the question is, "What is your relationship to person 1?"

See that's what I got from it and it's on my census form to, only the relationship to person 1...

You're correct. Though they wouldn't specify it on the form in this day and age, to a certain degree they're passively using the "Head of the household" title for person 1, as the person who is most authoritative in the house is naturally the one who'll fill out the form.

And on census forms, the relationship is always given relative to the head of the household.

Ok, so I've just double checked my census form and it is the relationship to every other person it lists person 1 and person 2 on person 3's question and person 1,2&3 on person 4's question and so forth...

Seems a bit mad. Surely if you were filling it out for a family where persons 1 & 2 were the parents, person 3 was a child, then person 4 can only answer "Other related".

Not that much use for statistical purposes.
