Alfa 156, cool looking car with a fantastic interior. And really cheap at the minute. Would be a good idea to become good friends with a mechanic though.

Seat Leon maybe? Yes it's a 5 door but it's cheap, 2006 had the 1.6 engine and lots of kit. Look for the Sport-up models

My 1.8 156 has gone like a peach the last two and a half years. Although it's very very low mileage and has been in the family since new so it came with no surprises. I love it. Build quality is questionable but is always overshadowed by just how lovely a place it is to be ;) Highly recommended.

What are your rough circs? I'm only young too and am not crippled on the 1.8 156 as it is (just sub €1k fully comp).

Aside from the Alfa, I have another bus.

21, 2yr NCB, 1200 fully comp on an Elise with Axa. You might need to just shop around!

Have to agree, at 28 it's costing just under 1k to get insured on a 1.6 Audi a3 fully comp

Besides insurance, I'd say that car must've set you back a few quid?

Elise's don't come cheap, no matter how old they get.

also the "1.6 thing" would be about not having to have a hitch on my car so i cud pull a small bulk tank of petrol around after me...

was considering diesel but from what iv read on here about all the problems diesel have it put me right off.

The difference in mpg between 1.6 and 2.0 will not be that much tbh. It all depends on the car of course. But it's worth keeping in mind.

looks very nice.5dr is better looking than the saloon version.
would assume id be murdered on the insurance once VZR is mentioned?

Im 20 with 3 years NCB and to get insured on a VZR it was 1900. It is a jap import so it will probably set you back that bit more.

I would also check out a Mitsubishi Lancer Mivec.

Thats just an example, you would find a nice, clean and original one for under 3k. Im just rushing to find a decent non-scanger example!

Only thing to watch with VZRs is replacing parts cos of wear and tear, especially cv joints, they're a fcuker to get, can only really be gotten in a main dealer and cost ~220 each

They aint that great on juice either....i'd expect 20-25mpg

Ouch! I hope lube is included in that price!

23 - 25 on an RX8 was under 1k for me, and currently my insurance is half what yours is now on a 1.8 at 26!

28 on a vRS Octavia and it's just over €700. It depends on your driving experience but thats madness.

OP, I'd look into the 156. Buy below your budget (should find a decent one cheap) and leave some for any jobs that need to be done.
