So you're taking photos of your Merc E200 to sell it on the web, there's two empty Red Bull cans in the passenger footwell and a LIDL flyer on the passenger seat. You also have the mobile plugged into the cigarette lighter so there's a cable visible running from the ashtray to the steering wheel area.

Do you remove all the rubbish and tidy away the charger cable?

Nope, see the photo of the dashboard, top right...

I hope that is a spelling mistake and that it is a 2.8 and not a 1.8!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,432 ✭✭✭Damokc

that would be a numerical mistake:P

I researched it and the said car is actually a 1.8 . I would have visions of a Honda scooter overtaking it, probably drinks petrol too with such small overworked engine!

The pictures are telling me the seller was of a typical Celtic tiger bourgeois who bought the thing without ever thinking straight he looks like a builder in the pic, now he's possibly broke and shops in Lidl and drives a crappy avensis and is hoping to flog the Merc to keep up with the repayments on his mac mansion built in the middle of nowhere about 5 miles from the nearest shop.

You get the feeling that the maintenance of the car will be similar to the presentation of it in the ad.

Exactly, and if he's so thick that he couldn't tell that idiot to get the f**k out of the shot in the first photo I doubt if he has the sense to maintain the car properly.

showroom condition. very low miles. in whose world!

56k km is pretty low mileage for for 3 years.

The E200 is pretty dead in the water as with the tax changes in 08,the purchase price of the diesel version came in much lower than this model. Mercedes then had to seriously discount the petrol version to shift them. Pretty hard to shift that now given its an old model and the pricing of the 220 cdi against it.

It pretty lazy advertising it like that but at least it doesnt look too filthy. I think they are around 185 bhp so not terribly slow. reasonable car for someone doing small mileage.

Isn't 12k miles a year seen as average or has this changed?

The only rubbish in that car is the whole interior...

Used to be alright but that would be an average over all car types whereas larger cruisers will generally cover more miles. In any event 56,000 km is maginally less than 3 x 12,000 miles so it is low mileage for that car anyway.

    Here's some speculative maths:

(The guy in the background of the first picture is wearing a reflective jacket) +
(the gizmo in the back seat that looks like a giant spirit level)
= the car is probably owned by a developer. If it has been exposed to muddy building sites, I wouldn't hold out too much hope for the state of the car's interior or underbelly.

^I was thinking it might be a Clarinet or a flute? Could have children messing the car, nothing new there. I wouldnt be put off by it going to see the car. But I would try and bring the price down by a grand :pac:

i always find that youre better off judging the seller than the actual car.

Theres 2 ways to look at this. First, that its genuine, that you are buying as seen and any deficiencies wont be covered up, you are literally buying what you see, an honest car. Or second, you could judge the man as careless and absent minded, so much so that servicing, good driving practice and general maintenance are low on his priority list.

If you get a good seller, who you think you can trust, who seems to know about the car, and is honest about any faults it may have, i think that is a more attractive option than buying a seemingly spotless car from a shifty cur.
