I'm switching from Arts to a CSSE degree next year and I was just wondering if anyone could tell me what it's like, if they've switched and how they found it etc.

Also I was curious as to what ya do about CS151, because it's a second year science and first year arts module.. so will I do it again or what other modules can I do instead?

Also any first year CSSEs wanna introduce yoselfs.. mainly because I know pretty much nobody in first year CSSE and I'm going to be totally lost next year! :D

A friend of mine in CSSE did this (I think) - instead of doing that module again, he just picked a different one (I think it was something music/computer related).

I'm going into 4th year though - fingers crossed - but just talk to people in the class, you'll make friends pretty quickly. And don't be too scared, after all, they're just nerds :pac:

You can't do the same module twice, you have to pick up the credits with another module. I know someone who did the same and ended up doing sound synthesis.

Just out of curiosity, why are you switching? I know every CS related department/institute/company/organisation in the world is mad for getting more women into the field.

    I presumed as much? :D

Do you know any other modules you can do.. sound synthesis sounds.. meh?

Well I'm in an Arts degree doing Maths, CS and Psychology.. and I don't really like Psychology too much, that's about the only reason.. plus I think a CSSE degree will look a bit better than my Arts one if I stuck that way? :)

Im in 4th CSSE, I changed form Arts when I was in first year and I had to do Digital Humanities with Dr John Keating from An Foras Feasa instead of CS151. Wasnt given a choice.

    Would reccomend the change tho...

Just got an email back from the Co-ordinator:

Apparently Arts students switching into 2nd year CSSE for next year will have to do CS275 instead of CS151.. does anyone know what CS275 entails.. it's called
    "Directed Reading for CSSE"

    .. sounds "interesting" :)

I've never heard of this at all, perhaps it's a new thing this year? Can't find anything on it in either the faculty website or the course information. You might need to talk to the coordinator again if you want to really find out about it!

That sounds like a new module specially tailored for those switching over.

Sounds like a reading course. Which is normally one of two things, either it's a made up module which doesn't exist and you won't have to do anything or you may have to submit some sort of small essay/thesis on a topic in the area.

Not that I'm aware of. Your year is the guinea pig year.

I'm going in to 3rd CSSE and I'd say I only know roughly 1/2 of my year and half of those I only met in this year, nothing to be worried about sure you'll be making friends right up to the day you leave.

Would anyone know what books I could need for 2nd year CSSE or know where I could get a reading list?

Any books whatsoever that might be needed.. :)

I never used any books until 4th year. Lecturers provide all the material you need.

As mp3guy said the lecture notes are plenty, chances are you might never step in to the library either :pac:

Hiya, I'm switching over from Arts to 2nd CSSE too. Anyone else out there doing this other than jellybean?

The module we take instead of cs151 ran for the first time last year. It's project based. Students get to pick what to do and must get it approved by the supervisor. One person did a smart phone app for theirs last year, can't remember what else.

Transfer deadline was 7th July I think, but late applications are permitted.

I know someone who transferred in the second week of first semester, it's usually pretty lax.

    Charles Markham, absolute legend.

Don't buy any books for CSSE, I wasted €400 on them in 1st year.

    CSSE 4 Life.

    Hi Pal79

There's a few people switching from science to CSSE, but you're the only person besides myself from Arts atm. There's a few of the class on here and there's a Facebook group too.

    :)

Well... there are one or two books that are worth the money, but in general you don't need any.
