My Dell inspiron 6400 has developed an intermittent problem of not showing the desktop when switched on. Switching off & on (manually) will bring the desktop up............however today I was without laptop all day as I couldn't restore desktop.. eventually did come on... anybody got any ideas as to problem>>> have run spybot & AVG scans, checked for bios updates, restored back to 3 months ago.... nothing!

When you say you get no desktop, what do you get.

    Can you see the cursor?

Is the screen blue / black.

What version of Windows do you have?

Try pressing Ctrl+Alt+Del if you can access the task manager click on File -> New Task (Run), type explorer.exe and press run / ok.

Try running a scan with Malwarebytes and Super anti-Spyware. Make sure to update before scanning.

Remove AVG (assuming its the free one) and try installing a trial of Eset Nod32 then scan with that.

Failing that look for messages in Event Viewer post the first few on startup of laptop.
