My sister currently has a 1997 fiesta which has given her great service but she's now thinking of making use of the scrappage scheme before it goes and buy a new 2011 car.

So im looking for advice of folk on here as to what to look at, avoid, etc.

She would like something between 1.2 and 1.5
    Diesel if possible
    Budget of approx €10,000 - €12,000

Possible3 options maybe: Ford Fiesta, Kia Rio, Seat Ibiza

    Any recommendations?

Not the Rio unless its the brand new 2011 model.

Fiat 500 maybe? 1.2 petrol and comes in at about €9,000 with scrappage scheme.

Why is the 2011 a better option than previous or what?

Only considering 2011 cars as its through the scrappage scheme

You'd be mad to dismiss the 500! one of the coolest cars on the market though rear room and boot space is said to be tight and I have not heard any horror stories (though no doubt someone here will contradict me) re the 500 or the Panda for that matter.

If we're dealing with "would'nt touch a Fiat" , it's probably not a stretch to assume there will be a "no renaults, they all blow up and melt in a ball of electrical problems" type of man in the pub told me opinion. :D

Let me guess... you've never even sat into a 500? Right?

The missus has had one since 2008 and it has converted me. A great little car with lots of character and fun to drive. Also very economical with low tax and sub 6.0L/100km (+47mpg) fuel consumption from a petrol. Comes with (or at least when we bought) a 3 year warranty and 3 years AA membership. However we have never had to avail of either. Servicing was cheap. I would suggest getting the "Blue & Me" bluetooth and media system (I think it was €300 extra).

Most of the cons I could list are just part of owning any small car. The boot is small. There is enough room for four adults to sit comfortably but getting in and out of the back is awkward. The wipers tend to "judder" when there's only light drizzle. Heater takes an age to de-fog the windows (although to be fair my own car has a heated windscreen). It'll easily accelerate to motorway speeds but is a bit "light" above 120kph.

    Should definitely be considered.
