First Arts Grading Scheme

    Evening all,

Just wondering does anybody on here know what exactly the story is regarding your final grade in First Arts? Is it the average of all three modules in each subject, and if so, I presume that would mean they would be all be worth even marks? As in, your christmas exams are worth 1/3 of your final mark, summer exams worth 1/3 of your final mark and your tutorial and essays as 1/3 of your final mark.

This could be an awful stupid question, but my head is fried and I need to cling on to any sort of hope in passing in the event of my summer exams not going to plan. Cheers :)

Your overall mark comes from the average of your subjects (although you get an individual mark in each module as well)

If you do better than your third year average in second year you'll get an average of 2nd+3rd year.

If you do better in third year on average then only your third year average will count towards your degree.

    That sounds good to me!

Are you sure? I never hear that in relation to Arts and have been been told by a masters Arts student that it's just 3rd year's results that count...unless it's changed in the past two years. I could be wrong now...

Arts faculty told me the same thing; that if you do better in 2nd year, it's the average of 2nd and 3rd year. If your final year is better, just final year.

From what I recall, if you're on the border between two grades, then they weight the average as favourably as possible, ie 66 Final Year to 33 Second Year.

OP didn't ask anything about 2nd or 3rd year...

I think someone might have asked about 2nd and 3rd year and then deleted it? Otherwise I don't know what came over me to start on about final arts results!

    First ARts grading scheme
    70% and up A
    60-69% B+
    50-59%B-

I don't think your results in first year even matter anyway, do they? So long as you just pass (and don't have to repeat the subjects you want to carry on with).

Essentially no, grades dont matter in first year once you pass and get into second year, but its wise to have a good foundation of the subjects youre keeping on in 2nd year.

That said, I did have a professor tell me recently that they have been known to check first year grades in the past when considering a person for a masters course for the subjects they majored in, in second and third year. So while grades dont "matter" in first year, they are still to some degree slightly important
