Do Landlords check references?

Just wondering how much detail they will go into when checking your references. If its not too thorough then cant I write my own glowing reference and give my mates phone number for the landlord to ring?

i doubt anything is stopping you from doing that - i did the exact same thing for a few jobs and got away with it -

Between this and the near death car experience, you're confessing far too much on boards. :p

I have a few staff working for me and they have asked to use me as a reference for new landlords etc. I have had calls from landlords then asking for a reference over the phone so it does happen from my experience

My last landlord rang every reference I gave.

    Sometimes they do ring up.

I've given myself some glowing references.

I'm not great at doing other voices/accents, but that's what friends are for :pac:

I've never given a past landlord reference.
Sure it's useless, it could be a friend with a mobile

Where I'm from landlords will check both references AND your credit history.

I have given name for a mate and got called once out of 3 occasions.

They dont go to town with the questioning. To be honest, i think the reason that a referee is asked for is to stop scumbags from getting into the job/new gaff. Theyd be too stupid to just give a mates mobile (one would hope). Its generally to give the illusion of checking detail and thus put off affore-mentioned gypsies.

I gave a reference to a friend a few months ago and it was followed up by her landlord to be, a quick call. A few years back I also had my own references checked and they asked for a fax from a ref. to confirm that I was who I said I was, I don't think that would happen today with the rental market the way it is.

I have had my name given as a reference to a landlord. He called me. Let's just say it didn't go as the would-be tenant intended.

A landlord always wants to be on the safe side in terms of getting his rent paid in time. I guess that's why they are looking for a reference.

I find private landlords mightn't bother but agents always will.
