Hi, I'am considering doing (Undenominated) science in Nuig next year, I love biology and would like to specialize in zoology, I haven't studied chemistry or physics before and I'am kinda worried about that, what is the first year like chemistry and physics wise? :D

For physics there are separate lectures for those who didn't do it for LC, the lecturer goes at an easy enough pace so I don't think too many people had difficulties with it. The labs were fine as well, they really help you through physics if you haven't done it before.

Chemistry is more or less the same as the LC course, I had done it for LC but even those who hadn't found it ok, it starts at the basics.

Thats great:) What to do you make of the course? would you recommend the course?

I don't do science, but I had my first year modules and lectures with the undenominated science people :) Afaik what they had in first year was about 12ish lectures a week and a 2-3 hour lab in each subject. First year science is very easy going :P But you'd still want to put the time in when you need to, to get results high enough to get your choice of 2nd year modules.

Look carefully and talk to some people before you decide to specialise in Zoo at NUIG. 1st year got my hopes up a little but I just finished 2nd year and am seriously considering transferring to Cork for Zoo as I'm fairly disappointed with the quality at the moment, and Cork seems to compare much more favourably. Not sure if it gets better from 3rd year on and is worth sticking with .

    +1 on what Queen said.

First year science is easy enough. if you put any bit of work in, you'll come out with a decent grade in all your subjects. one thing i'd recommend doing is going to most of your tutorials. they really do help a lot, even if you think you know the stuff.

i think i had about 24/5 hours a week last year, including labs in physics and chemistry. most of the demonstrators are sound and will help you no problem. shouldn't be too hard as long as you do some work.

Great thanks a million for the advice! I think I'll do it now:D
hope it works out for you steel_spine!:)

Sorry to hijack your thread, but I do physics, chemistry and biology at LC, will first year science be kinda boring seeing as the prospectus says they assume you have JC science level of knowledge? Or is there different lectures for those who've done the subjects already? Don't really fancy a year in revision! :P

I did phys, chem and biology in 1st science and I'd only done biology to LC level way back in '91 so not sure if the course is a repeat of LC material......

I'd imagine it most likely is and as far as I remember when I was in 1st year three years ago there was a separate phys class for those who had studied it in LC......

dunno about biology, but physics is the only subject with separate classes for those who have and haven't done physics before. everyone's lumped in together for chemistry.

chemistry is basically a redo of the LC with a few extra bits thrown in. i didn't show up for most of my semester 2 classes last year, yet i still got a high mark. the lecturers went very slow.

it's different in physics, they go faster since you're supposed to know a lot already. some of the lecturers make it very interesting and it's worthwhile to show up for most of your lectures.

I did Biology, Physics and Chemistry in first science with just Ag science in the leaving cert, and I was worried too but there's absolutely no need, its handy in first year. Go to tutorials, and if you go to all your labs and do the write ups afterwards your well on your way to a pass without even sitting an exam. I wanted to specialize in Zoology, but disappointingly found the course quality poor in second year. Physiology was excellent though!:D

Can I ask, when did you do Science in NUIG? Where did it lead you (if you wanna say) and would you recommend it? :)

I'm still doing it (mature student).
I'm headed into 4th year and will be doing Microbiology for my final year. I've enjoyed it for the most part and would definitely recommend it to anyone.

Through a family connection I've organised 2 student placements for myself this summer in a micro lab and the regulatory Dept. of a medical devices company (unpaid but definitely an advantage on my future CV).

Didnt do physics at either level, but did the other two and things were fairly easy throughout.

Trust me, by final year you'll be wanting an easy time. Enjoy first year, join societies and club. Dont spend all your time studying. Equally, dont spend all your time dossing around, get up and do things you would never consider doing in school. I am full of regrets for taking first year too seriously and not being able to do some things later due to exams and stuff.
