Make the most of it, try and research what courses you want to do and where and when they take place. Arrange a meeting with your FAS supervisor although you should have an initial meeting with you supervisor or assistant supervisor re what you want to get from the time on the scheme. Let them know what areas you want training in and they should endevour their best to help you get on the courses. Once you have settled on a course your Fas supervisor will apply to the college/trainer and pay them on your behalf. There is a general allowance per head on each scheme but not everybody uses this(lack of interest usually), this can free up money for others so you may get to do a lot of training.

I am coming to the end of two year stint and I used my time to brush what I learned at third level.
I have done an ECDL, Payroll, medical/dental/legal receptionist course.
As well as manual handling and will be doing a three day first aid course this week.
There is a lot red tape and you have to meet your superivsor and fill out forms at regular intervals but use the time wisely, play the game and get as many courses as you can out of your time.
Good luck with your new job, I don't regard myself as being on a scheme, mine is a job and I happen to love it and will be heartbroken to leave it at the end of april but such is life and it goes on.

It's a job; you're essentially wotking for 188 a week (or whatever you'll be getting), despite that it's called a "scheme", you're working and you only work for a job.

    And congrats. :)

I believe the likes of safe passes, computer courses, driving (small bus, truck)the main thing is to get any courses done that might help with a job after the scheme is finished.

depends on what field your doing your ce scheme in?
i did mine in childcare so i was giving my courses in childcare to get my fetac level 5
you also get to do first aid which is great but it will take up some of your time but worth it
some places don't mind what type of coarse you do you can pick your own up to a certain amount you will need to ask your supervisor

Some CE employers are better than others. Make sure that you have regular chats with your CE superviser to ensure that you get the benefits of the training budget (500 Euro max per year) and also the option of a one month work experience in another employment, which could substantially increase job prospects.

Also CE employees are eligible to join a Trade Union, and some Unions have specific branches for CE employees.

Unfortunately there are some employers in the community field who do not adhere to best practice in employment procedures. You need to keep an eye on this, or you could end up wasting what is a potentially valuable opportunity.

Hi im on a CE Scheme at the moment doing Childcare. I was just wondering if anyone knows of what your entitlements are re: time off etc. In particular, I was wondering if anyone knows if you do a First Aid Course do you get time off in lieu or what ????? Also, my husband is not working (he is claiming for me and the children) but I was told that I would get travel expenses for college and for any courses I do. I get 208 per week. Any help would be most appreciated, as at certain times I feel like im been taking advantage of!! Im slightly confused as went onto FAS Website and the information on that seems to contradict itself at times. Thanks for any help you may give

You would have signed a contract of employment when you started the scheme have a look at it.Any courses that you do the time spent on them is usually counted in the 19/5 hours you do a week.

I am just finishing a two year stint on a CE scheme and have never heard of anyone getting travel expenses but these things although they are supposed can vary from one scheme to another from what I can see.
Make an appointment to see your FAS superivisor and do not be afraid to ask any questions and get matters clarified after all this is what they are paid.

As regards hours for courses, the time spent on courses which are deemed necessary for you job ill count towards your 19.5 hrs or by built up for time in lieu. eg Manual handling, first aid, childcare(if in a creche) and will be funded by fas. otherwise fas will fund courses and you do them in your own time.
Make the most of the time and keep asking questions, It took me a while to figure that one out!!! And when you finish one course get straight on to your fas supervisor about the next course you want to do. Its the best way to make out of the scheme.

    Good luck and enjoy

Ring the INOU 018560088 their information officers know a huge amount

Not everyone is aware of this, but if you find work you can leave the c.e. scheme for up to 14 weeks and your place on the scheme is held open for you and in case the job doesn't suit you or has ended and then you can return to the scheme.

Some new Supervisors may not be aware of this.

I don't have any hard copy as they say but I was on a scheme years ago and that option was explained to us by the supervisor, also the scheme I am currently on, one participant has availed of this option and got temporary work which has ended and they have now returned to the scheme.

By taking this other job did they lose the benefits included ike medical card? It seems odd to leave one job for 16 weeks and go to another one short term, my supervisor and sponsor would feel i would have no interest in the place i work and i wouldn't get a second year or third year as a result.

The whole objective of the scheme as run by the DSP is to encourage as much as possible participants to take up opportunities that may lead to getting them back to work.

There would be no loss of benefits otherwise no one would take it up. Its only 14 weeks max after all.

Some sponsors may not welcome this element of the scheme, but its the duty of C.E. Supervisor to do what's right for participants also they are under pressure from DSP to show that they are 'Progressing' participants.

Supervisor's are only on a 1 year contract also or less in some cases.

this is not so the supervisor in our place has been in his position for at least over 5 years

Its in the CE rules - they're not published on the internet

Some have been there a lot longer but its only on a yearly contract, reason being (I guess) is, that projects are run on a year to year basis and could be pulled at any time but some of course go on for years after being approved and renewed each year.

Could be all gone next year if the Troika get their way.:(

See your gp on Friday and get cert back dated.

Some sponsors are very strict on providing certs so best get them. Add an extra week on if you've been over worked:D

It depends on your supervisor, really they should get one before pay day.

If you have a reasonable supervisor & explain he could allow you hand it in later as long as its back dated.
