Hitting off the deck.

I can hit the ball quite well off the tee, driver & irons to par 3's.
My problems start with the 2nd shots off the deck, whether its a flat lie, side hill up or downhill I seem to either fat the shot or thin it but on occasion I can flush it from the fairway.
I'm off 18 but getting frustrated by the week with the whole saga of my golf game.

Any ideas where I am going wrong when it comes to my 2nd shot from the short stuff.....Also I rarely take a divot with my irons too this may have a baring on where I am going wrong. Any suggestions...?

sounds like you are not hitting down on the ball at all, so are fine when you are hitting off the tee, but eith no tee you are either catching the ground as you try to scoop the ball in the air or catching the ball thin if a little late on it.

Practise hitting off the mats at the driving range, they are unforgiving for those issues so it should help.

Yeah def try and strike down on the ball a lil. I know it sounds mad to be striking down but it's just a slightly more downward stroke and this allows the ball to 'pop' up and follow through. It helped me to just imagine the ball was not even there. One fluent swing through the back of it. Think of it as hitting through the ball and not just hitting it. Good luck.

This is probably not his best video but kinda deal's with what you are asking about. Would really recommended looking at all his videos as he is a really practical coach. I also find his coaching methods easy to understand but they are not precise enough for lower handicaps but they are good enough to get you their :p Nothing worse than reading random tip's in golf digest or something geared to someone fine tuning a tuning a swing and not someone working on just striking the ball well.

Also best tip ever for striking and I find most over looked in the beginning is "head still" . No movement what so ever is the feeling you need. When you hear about the pro's and head movement it really in the context of power move's, which is again back to tweaking an already brilliant swing. For us amateurs keeping out head still keeps us over our ball and swinging the way we set up. If you move a couple of inch's any direction it means the swing needs to be adjusted completely in motion and leads to fats tops slices ect.. take a look a Luke Donalds head here, moves a little bit but is remarkably steady considering the swing he is putting on it.

Best of luck anyway. Hope the Shawn Clement videos help.

Thing is If I try to hit down this is when I fat it, maybe its a path issue (too steep) on the way down? Suppose only way to find this out is to video the swing.
Its soul destroying right now when I'm, so confident off the tee (Driver is my favourite club for obvious reasons :D )

Will try to get a look at the youtube vids in next 10 mins or so & will give my opinion :(

Yeah get it on tape, it's the only way to get real insight is by getting a look at it yourself and then maybe a second opinion. To be honest can't really do much but give you random tips unless I see your swing on video.(and even at that can't see the full ball flight so would even be limited).

I'v heard it said before that driver swing and iron swing are the same but to be honest thats bull. It is true that if you have one going for you the others are easier but that are completely different. Like you said the plane and the amount of turn are individual to the club. Actually my driver, irons, pitch, chip shots all require different set ups and techniques.

Also I'm just a well educated golfer so even though I know a good bit about technique and swings I would lack the ability to make whatever swing you have work for you. Thats where going to see a pro comes in. They can prioritize changes and also customize them to your style/swing. Thats almost a terrible answer because Its kinda like saying go ask someone else, but they are immensely more qualified. But if you are looking for some quick free opinions I think throwing up a video of your swing do no harm.

Yes the answer is go see your pro but just wanted to get opinions of others out there that may have had the same the problems & what they did to eradicate them (if they did that is :D )
That Clement guy is certainly a quirky character alright, but quite informative, simplifies things down, doesnt have the prettiest of swings but gets the message accross. I'm going to try to release the club much later as I feel I'm scooping rather than hitting down fingers x ;)

Hit some 3/4 shots with your feet only about 1 foot apart, swaying will kill iron shots but can be fine with a driver...

As always, get a lesson and get it sorted in 30 mins.

Most stupid thing i've read on this forum today and god knows your fella going on about McIlroy having a bad swing was up there for a while.

Get a lesson, find out what you are doing wrong and work on what the Pro tells you; but YOU MUST WORK ON IT. It takes much longer to bed in changes than 30mins

To be fair I think he probably meant that the root of the problem would be found in 30 minutes........eradicating it may take months of hard work as you said.

So general consensus is go see a pro & hopefully he finds out the problem. Then go work on it really hard to build up muscle memory & not give up until I've reached my goal.

I think feel is definitely different from real when practicing the swing especially when you look at your own swing. My swing thought until I get to see a pro is let the hands come nearly into the middle of my stance during the downswing keeping the L shape then release my hands trying to make contact with the ground well in front of the ball. Now this info is in my head it's just a matter of doing it correctly at the range (preferably a grass range to see divot mark)

    Thanks for the replies lads

Actually it's not that obvious and you should try articulating your posts better  I'd expect a bit better from a mod ;)

There are some gobsh1tes that go to a lesson, are hitting the ball well by the end and then proceed to assume the swing issue is resolved.
