In every paper I've been reading during the week the previews for the Monaghan Mayo game said that Monaghan had to win and hope that Armagh were beaten down in Cork. A goal difference of 6 points in favour of Armagh would have to be wiped out for Monaghan to survive.

With the matches just having finished, Monaghan won by 2 points and Armagh were beaten by 6 points ie an 8 point swing in Monaghans favour.

However listening to RTE they are saying Monaghan have been relegated as they lost to Armagh and therefore have an inferior head to head to record.
If this is the case then Monaghan never stood a chance and were already relegated before todays matc h? How come nobody in the media realised this?

Even on the RTE website today at half time they were saying :
"Monaghan have 35 minutes to save their Division 1 status."

Is this just a case of nobody knowing the rules or have I missed something?

Head to head if two teams are level.

Points difference if more then two teams.

If Galway won as well it would have been PD

And the Dubs played a lot of that game with 14 men. Sickener for Monaghan alright. Especially considering they should have beaten Armagh.
