Hi guys , there is a kind of whine coming from first and second gear on the car , it sounds abit like when you go fast in reverse gear, I'm a bit concerned as its a common problem with them having a soft gearbox.

Is this ok or is it something to be worried about.
Ps the gear oil is fine as I checked it.

    Thanks for the help.

Of course any noise like that is something to be concerned about but the boxes in an N15 are not soft.

How did you check the oil?

I had it up on a two post lift and opened the square nut on the front of the box and the oil level was fine .

The resaon I say the boxes are soft as I know of four 96-00 almera's with them gone.

The car drives fine and goes into gear like it should. I just wanted to see you in particalar did you ever hear of it before. I,m just being cautious as I'm giving the car to my sister who lives in cork and i live in galway and the thought of heading down to cork with a second hand box are up setting.

Your advice is really appricated. so any more info ??

    hey,

i've a 98 almera hatchback that had this exact same problem. in gears 1-3 you would hear a rough whining noise (almost like it was grinding) had a mechanic friend look at it. gearbox was wearing itself away. Dodgy bearing. Just got another gearbox from a breakers yard and had it fitted. grand since.

this is a massivley common problem with almeras (or so i'm told). as long as its changing into gears theres no immediate danger :)
