Kilbane played with both players when they were just breaking into first team football; Robbie when he strted playing for Ireland and Rooney when he broke into the Everton first team. KK reckons that Robbie, as a young player, was better than Rooney!

Note: KK is only comparing these two players at a time when they were young and breaking into professional football, so bear in mind that Robbie was one of the hottest prospects in world football when he was young and was bought by Inter. KK is not comparing the entire career and achievemnst/medals of Robbie Kena to Ronney's entire career.

lol, Robbie was a great player but could never change or influence a game like Rooney could/can. At his best he was just one level below Rooney.

I don't think that sensible approach will be adopted by too many in this thread.

Robbie had the world at his feet at 18/18/19. The Inter transfer is where he screwed up. I think Keane has more ability on the ball than Rooney. Just Rooney has different attributes that make him better.

Both players are HUGELY over-rated, but in no way and at no time was Keane ever anywhere near as good as Rooney.

as a united fan i kinda agree,at 18 or 19 keane scored more goals in the prem with a weaker team than rooney did.

For the second time, please note that Kilbane was comparing Robbie Keane at age 17-20 to Wayne Rooney at age 17-20. Kilbane played with both players when they were young, so he's actually in a good position to compare the two.

Firstly Rooney has developed in the better player..... I think thats a given fact (by a country mile IMO)


But just to pour some petrol on the fire it could be argued that at least Robbie Keane performed /turn up at the biggest Stage (test ) of them all .. The World Cup something Rooney has failed to do (yet )

their both strikers but nothing alike. at 18 keane was like a mini (real) ronaldo. rooney would never score a goal like keane did against aston villa on his coventry debut, whereas keane would never score a goal like rooney did against arsenal on his prem league debut

Honestly, there is an arguement to be made for Keane on this one, if his career had taken a different path, if the manager who signed him for Inter for example hadnt left the club so soon after he came, he might have developed into a real world class player there

As a youngster he did have some serious potential, I dont think he ever fully realised it, but Rooney went to the right club to develop himself, Keane didnt imo

Nah, I dont think it's too far wrong to say that Rooney himself was actually a better player at 18 than he is now. I've looked over some of his performances at Euro 2004 and in his first season at United. Just to see him running at people like that was a joy.

Robbie was brilliant back then too, but not as much so

Of course Rooney is by far the better player, interesting though that internationally Keane (45 in 106) has a much better strike rate than Wayne (26 in 70).

isnt that the idea though Kilbane is saying Robbie was better not is. We arent talking about how they developed here just that at one point it could be argued Robbie was a bigger talent than Rooney, however Rooney yes has progressed to a higher level, on that id say even Kilbane would agree.

I'd say at a young age Robbie could have been considerd better but Rooney had more potential, not sure if that would be right but I wouldnt be shocked if someone had stats to back something like that up
