Last night on Vicent Brown one of the guests was discussing the moriarity tribunal and said that one of the barristers involved in the tribunal earned over 9 million euro during the 15 year inquiry. Could this be true?

I remember Lowry stating that they were on €45K a month. So that does roughly work out to 600K a year, so 9 million would be about right.

Wayne Rooney earns something like €21 million per year though, he makes the Moriarty solicitors look like they're on minimum wage!

It is true. Despite what you think there are public spirited barristers who will give up private practice in favour of the public good. They are often prepared to work for years surviving on much reduced earnings in order to bring out the truth.

I understand that those figures are gross. So the figures include 21% VAT, so that goes immediately back to the exchequer. After income tax, prsi, levies, etc. the exchequer probably get back about another 50% of the balance.

Still an awful lot of money going to a handful of barristers but not exactly the same jaw dropping figures that make the newspaper headlines.

Very strange way to look at things or are cash top ups common in private practise at the bar?
