Cheap or High end?

I want to get a laptop pretty soon, as I currently done have one after my 5 year old one died on me a few months back.

I am tempted to splash out on a laptop like this http://www.sony.co.uk/product/vn-c-series/tab/models but I am unsure about spending so much money on a laptop.

I plan to use the computer for doing programming and doing a bit of photoshop stuff. Would like a high enough spec but im not looking for a gaming laptop or anything.

I want a 14" as well, my last laptop was that size and I thought it was a perfect size.

For a while I wanted to get a Dell Latitude E-series as I just loved the look of the laptop its self.

So what I am asking should I splash out on a fancy looking laptop or should I go for a cheaper laptop. Also I will be buying the laptop in pounds.

That laptop could struggle with Photoshop. What is your budget ie what are you comfortable spending?
You would be better with a dedicated graphics card, rather than integrated graphics, and a faster processor for running image editing software.

IMO high end is the way to go. Bought my laptop for over 1k about 18 month ago and it is still very fast even by todays standards. Had laptop that cost me €450 before that and it was annoyingly slow from the day 1 so ended up buying new laptop after 10 months. Try to get a laptop with SSD hard drive. Makes HUGE difference performance wise.

    Was thinking of getting this

good or bad idea getting a refurbished machine?

Like I would really like to get the first laptop above but I am a bit unsure about spending near £700 on laptop.

It's grand but it's certainly not high spec. The processor and integrated graphics card rule that out. There's nothing wrong with refurb devices as you can pick up bargains. I dont think that this is a bargain though

Is there any other laptops that I should be looking at?

high end is going to cost over a ton

you need to understand this first as they got dedicated graphics, big juicy hard drives, decent screens and very decent processors.

    ton = one hundred

    grand = one thousand

    saveonlaptops.co.uk

check a few models, and read reviews

500 quid max, unless you want something you're afraid to even touch

photoshop and programming shouldn't be too demanding anyway

have a look at the 13.3's, very light, long batt life, better selection and insane prices

sorry,. a grand obv i meant.

the laptops you have mentioned are no way near 'high end' so i wonder what your budget is

If it was me I would buy a XPS M1730 with a X9000 cpu and a 9800GT sli

it will destroy about 60-70% of all laptops going today.

the ones it wont destroy will cost about 3,000euro

(I have one, with a SSD hard disk and I can confirm it is quite the beast)

Still havent made my mind up, went into Currys the other day and see these two and was wondering what you think of them?

Also how do I know if the HD is SSD?

Both hard drives are not SSD's as they have rpm's quoted. SSD's dont have moving parts and for the price they're way too big. A big ssd would be expensive. If you want me to pick I'd go with the HP but the Acer is good too.

Which out of these would be the best buy?

Lenovo over Sony, any day of the week.

Just to weigh in, the expensive laptops will have nice specs, they're also built SOOOO much better, my own laptop and my brothers are similar spec machines, his cost just under 600. Mine was about 850 IIRC, the quality of mine compared to his is just amazing though, I'd definitely spend the extra for the better build quality.

Whatever you decide on, make sure you see it in person.

A lot of the new laptops use very cheap LCD screens, even the more expensive Sony VAIOs, and the display can look very washed out.

My 10 year old Sony Vaio owns the screen on my newer Vaio and is only comparable in brightness and quality to the wife's MacBook Air.

I've been thinking about picking up this little monster... If you know anyone in the US who can send it to you, you'll pay about €850, if not, it'd be about €1,000. There's a site called HIDevolution, who you can purchase it from. They're just a Dell reseller, but... well, give them a call, ask them about import taxes. :)
