I was looking at a Dell but they seem very expensive.....the laptop would be for internet use and saving college work and thats pretty much it....i was then told to get an acer laptop.....its all confusing to me!! i wanna spend about 500e max....ive een giving lotsa places to try...ie DID, Back From The Future, Harvey Normans...I want a laptop that will also have a good after care service...

If you're just going to be using it for college work, ie. writing documents or browsing the internet then 2GB-4GB of ram/memory will be fine.

I would go for a 15-15.6" screen as they tend to be the most popular sized laptops so if anything does go wrong, parts will be available.

Try and avoid HP, compaq & Dell (inspiron range). Lenovo would be a good buy. Sony are generally overpriced imo.

This Acer for ~€400 from Amazon.co.uk, Lenovo for €470 from Dabs.ie or Toshiba for ~€400 from Dabs.ie. Any of those 3 would do but if it were me I'd go for the Lenovo, then Toshiba and then Acer.

What type of course will you be taking?

I don't think any course requires apps that need anywhere near 4 gb ram, ram is not so important anyway, unless ofcourse you are doing multimedia in college and in that case you should go for a Mac.

I bought a nice laptop for over 1.2k when I was starting out in a transistion college two years ago, and while it was really usefull during the year there and ran photoshop etc superb, it's been sitting on my desk since then doing nothing. are you really sure you want to invest €500 on a laptop when you might need the money the year after and not the laptop? I could just about sell mine now for €400+ though i'd probably settle for €240 and thats with windows 7/ huge screen/ plays HD youtube/ Toshiba/ 2GB ram etc etc, so be careful because you're throwing money into a black hole :)

(If you do go ahead with buying one go for a Toshiba like I did, they have the lowest hardware problems reported in the first 3 years of life of any brand and I never had one problem with mine :) )

    Here you go.

    • 14inch ideal for portability, going in and out to college.
    • 3-4hr battery - relatively solid
    • Has a dedicated GPU (nothing special tbh but abit more scope for playing older games or some of the less demanding modern games on low settings)
    • i3 core cpu, more than sufficient for your needs. (and importantly new tech, not 4-5 year old dual core tech still advertised in currys and what not...always good to futureproof your investment.)
    • Nice size HDD, LED display, Good connectivity...HDMI etc
    • 4gb ram with room to expand...more than enough for your needs
    all for €460 delivered
