    * Denotes Reserve Referees

    The International Rugby Board has announced the Panel of match officials who will preside over the 48 matches at Rugby World Cup 2011 in New Zealand in September and October.

    A streamlined Panel of 10 Referees will be supported by seven dedicated Assistant Referees and four Television Match Officials at Rugby’s showcase event.

    The selection was made after a comprehensive review of refereeing performances by the IRB Match Official Selection Committee, chaired by IRB Council Member David Pickering, at its meeting in Dublin on Tuesday and Wednesday.

    While the appointments for the 40 Pool matches will not be announced until August, the IRB can confirm that Ireland’s George Clancy, making his Rugby World Cup debut, will take charge of the opening match between hosts New Zealand and Tonga at Eden Park on September 9.

    He had the temerity to give Richie McCaw a yellow card. He wasn't going to the world cup after that

    Too old apparently.. We all know the real reason however.

    Also its incredible how far Clancy has come. I remember people worried about him reffing an AIL game!

    I wonder is that the official reason why Mark Lawrence isn't there either? He's a better referee than most of the 10.

    But he probably is a bit on the old side for an international, born in 1964 iirc. Better ref than some selected but he really does struggle to keep up with the game these days.

    Great to see Clancy get the 1st game and hopefully an Irishman wont be able to get the last one ;)

    He's a great ref but at some point it has to come to an end. If the refs don't treat NZ fairly I'm gonna go up as far as IRB headquarters and cause havoc, true story.

    All SH refs? That seems odd.

    maybe he's improved but Clancy has always struck me as a shocking referee...scottish standard....

  • He's gotten considerably better in fairness to him. Obviously worked on his game.

    Still would have him miles behind Alan Lewis, but seems like you piss off NZ you piss away your chances.

    Our dear friend Mr. Kaplan for the Italy game with his old mate Nick Mallett in charge of Italy, oh dear I sense another early exit.
    On the plus side I won a cheeky 200 quid last time out betting on the group exit so will lump on it again
