    Hi all!
My van is going for the doe next week, and i have a stupid ABS light on my dash, that is going to fail it straight away!
I have had it looked at a few times now with no luck as yet, but im tight for cash for the next few weeks and will not be able to afford to get it fixed on time for the test now.
I need to find a fuse so i can 'disable it' apparently and get the light to go off.
Does anyone have the fuse layout /diagram for a vw caddy van? its a new shape one, if that makes any difference! i dont have it/didnt get it when i bought the van!
    Thanks in advance!

That's not gonna work mate,I've tried it, I took dash clocks out and taped up abs light, failed test for light not working ,had to go on computer to see what problem was and it was front sensor not working, new was 90 euro and fitted myself, light then when out....so I'd say you need to fix whatevers causing it to stay on.

    Get your brakes fixed.
Faulty ABS system might be very dangerous.

Try disconnect the battery for 5 minutes and reconnect it, that might reset the fault. Remember to have your radio code if it has one otherwise it will lock when battery is disconnected.

Have a look at the sensor yourself. It may be a broken wire or a dirty sensor.

Does the light come on on ignition and stay on?

    or

Does the light come on, go out, and re-light after 2/300 metres?

If its the 2nd scenario, its a good chance its dirt/dust/muck on a wheel sensor, which might be a simple fix.

If its the first scenario, it could be anything in the abs system.

    How "very" dangerous?

The problem is with your brakes, not the light. Get it fixed. This is why the NCT exists - to force people like you to fix faults that could be life threatening. Both to you and others.

Potentially the difference between safely stopping in an emergency and the wheels locking and skidding into whatever your trying to avoid.

typical Irish "Del-boy" attitude...got a problem with my brakes, how can I get around it so it passes the test?

I think we were much better off in the days when the test was "brakes, steering lights and tyres" and everyone was concious of that and kept them all A1...oh wait..that wasnt in THIS country was it!

    that deffo wont work.

OP, you should fix them brakes, dont understand people cutting corners with automobiles, they are not toys.

no wonder Ireland is so bad with accidents and crap 2nd hand cars with things like this.

If you think its "very" dangerous to drive without ABS, do you also think its therefore "very" dangerous to drive a car that doesn't have ABS?

what if its a fault that causes something more serious to occur? I'm not a mechanic but then again nor am I a laptop plugged in to tell what the fault light might be revealing.

Things fail on a car all the time. You'd assume it would be designed to fail in a way that wouldn't send you through the hedge. Otherwise it would be a major design flaw.

I would say that yes it is actually dangerous for a person who has most likely spent many years driving with abs to suddenly not have it especially given how familiar the car and its previous braking performance will be to the driver. This IMO is a different situation to having a car that never had abs.
Additionally, we used to have an audi 100 that was quite excellent on the brakes but became a disaster (due to skidding way too easily) when the abs became faulty.

If someone is driving that hard, that they get "used" to using the ABS, or skidding that much, they can't drive without. The fault is not with the car.

exactly, In the few near misses and near accidents ive been involved in, i've never had to let it get to the stage where my abs was used

Corktina. if i were you i'd be more inclined to worry about bad drivers than an abs sensor on as car

Question: when they start the car, would they fail you if the ABS light didn't come on? In my own car, the various dashboard lights would come on, and then goes off when the car finishes its quick check.

They would yes. Thats to stop people taking the bulb out of the cluster or disabling the bulb.

Unless it wet you would need to stand on the brake pedal to activate the ABS on a modern car. For example in the race school even braking from 145km/h to take a double right hander and braking in a very short distance the abs still wont kick in.

Well thats my point in regular driving you shouldn't get used to it! I've only noticed it a handful of times. Obviously on the recent ice. But other than it would have to be emergency braking, probably on the wet. But it would be pretty rare. We also have a car with no abs. TBH I haven't done many emergency braking in that either. I certainly haven't done it so much that I've missed it.

Incidentally, the ABS actually stopped working, and the dealer said it wasn't a problem to drive it with it not working.

The rare time is the one time you'll want and need it.

The rare time is the one time you'll want and need it.

If its rare you won't be used to the braking distance achieved with it. it was implied you'd be relying on that familiarity. If it wasn't working.
