The cost of the bin collection has gone down.
I think the new system is better :o

Why don't you use the recycling bin?

I can only assume its a cost saving measure. He was losing a lot of business to AES, who if I'm not mistaken use a similiar system, so he had to do something.
He has reduced the charge of the collection as Nead21 said and dropped 2 collections per month: ie: The 2 recycling collections per month.

Personally, I find that I would have twice or 3 times as much in the recycling bin as the waste bin so if you start using the recycling maybe you won't need the 2nd waste bin?

I think AES collect compost and waste bins on the same day and recycling the following week. Is that right?

You're still disposing of the same amount of waste aren't you?
Perhaps a bi-weekly collection would allow them reduce collection costs and avoid introducing a price increase. I'd guess many people would prefer a bi-weekly collection instead of a price increase for a weekly collection.

And are 2 bins suddenly more unsightly than 1, and if so can't you screen them off?

Perhaps you could review if there is anything you can do to cut down on the amount of waste you're generating, it might reduce the need of the second bin.

I think the point here is that Whelans have reduced their general waste collection by 50% but have not dropped their charges accordingly. I do appreciate that there are fixed costs in their charges hence we shouldn't expect a reduction of 50% in their charges but I would wager that Whelans are making money through this reduction in service.

The unfortunate thing here is that they are emulating their competition and the lack of alternatives means that the consumer really has no options.

For AES you pay twice yearly for your recycling service (I think it is 120). Recycling bin is collected every second week. Every time you put out your waste bin - there is a 7euro charge & putting out your compost bin, it is a 3 euro charge. (I think they are the right prices).

Barring anything strange in the house - I would put out recycling bin every two weeks, rubbish bin once a month & recycling bin every two months.

On Ray Whelans - their prices have gone down with this new system, but they don't what they were or are now. Even with this price change they are still not as flexible as AES.

Small bin is €20 per month and large is €23.50 which is still a lot cheaper than aes and your weekly collection is on the same day each week but alternating between recycling and normal waste.

Aes charge a monthly fee which must be paid every three months in advance by direct debit or bank transfer etc plus a weekly bin charge. Their collections are all on different days with your food and normal waste on alterNate weeks and recycling bi-weekly or monthly? You will also be charged quite a lot for the special biodegradable bags for the food bin after the first lot they give you run out.

This is the way most bin companies work, and have worked for years.
