If you'd the money to buy that you surely wouldn't be worrying about the cost of tyres :p

Looks like they use a tin of liquid rubber and just paint the rim.:)

Wouldn't be a fan of the wheels, but judging by the photos it looks like it might be a necessity for them to be that big to cover the front brakes? Brakes look fooooking HUGE!

Someone finally found a way to make a GTR look cack.

    :(

I really dont like the GTR at all. Those wheels are far too big that car.

    I disagree with you 100% :)

The car looks well. But i hate the wheels, I hate jumbo wheels, they just look dumb.

I'd imagine it would effect all the jiggery-pokery in the electronics. As people have said it looks kak.

It'd ruin the transmission with the extra torque loads and destroy the performance.

Did they fit the car to the wheels?

Even if they are made of super duper light stuff?

The performance loss isn't due to the weight of the wheels, it's due to their radius and the resultant increase in torque needed to make the wheel rotate(distance x force = torque)

So the thinking is the diameter of those wheels shod on those tyres is greater than what it should be?
My query was aimed more at the damaging the transmission claim.

The radius is aye. The reason it can damage the transmission is because more torque is needed to turn the wheels putting more strain on the gearbox. Mightn't be a problem on a Bora or Rover 75 or whatever, but on a sportscar I imagine it might be if driven hard.

The front tyres on this have a 4.5% smaller rolling radius, the rear tyres 3.5% smaller

Well a google revealed GTRs come from the factory with 255 40 20s on the front and 285 35 20s on the back. I reckon tyres with suitable profiles could be found to accommodate 21s without too much increase in overall diameter :)

For example 285 30 21s on the back would be hunky dorey, don't know if such a tyre exists though :pac:

~Only saw now in the OP's post the tyre size.

The GTR runs 20 inch wheels as standard so 21's would be of minimal difference. The GTR's factory transmission can handle up to 650hp before it displays weaknesses so an extra inch on the wheels will have no effect.
Also premium wheels like the Advans are likely to be lighter and stronger then the factory wheels so the reduction in unsprung weight would improve handling and the myth that you can't change the wheels on a GTR is just that.

I thought you worked with tyres? You should know better than to judge two tyres on what inch diameter the alloys are rather than on rolling radius. It's like judging cars performance on engine size rather than bhp :D
Had no idea the gtr gearbox was so strong, explains how they seem to do so well on dragtimes.info

Love that white GTR but the silver one looks completely lost without the spoiler

I didn't judge two tyres at all. I said an extra inch in wheels size wouldn't make a difference. Its a bit pedantic to go into every tiny detail when posting in a public forum, so I didn't. If larger wheels are fitted, its a given that the correct profile tyres to suit the increased wheel diameter would be fitted, we aren't talking about a set of Halfords alloys on a punto here.

The GTR box is, mechanically bullet proof. The only things that need upgrading to make the box capable of upwards of 850hp is two stronger circlips and two stronger clutch plate seals.

I'm far from an expert but why were there loads of guys in the US with gearbox failures if its bullet proof? I remember a couple of guys trying to sue Nissan because they wouldn't repair them under warranty

There not unbreakable though, the launch control puts a lot of strain on the gearbox and they go boom. Also if you use the launch control the warranty is void for the gearbox!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 8,223 ✭✭✭Nissan doctor

As far as I'm aware they based their case on the fact that the car has a launch control function, but yet componants of the gearbox can't cope with multiple launches.

Nissans arguement was that the launch function was not designed for the end user to access. The user manual doesn't give instructions on how to access it and it was designed as a diagnostic/test function!

The problem for people who claimed they hadn't launched the car was that the ecu records all data including number of times the launch function was accessed. The only way to remove this info was to flash/remap the ecu...in which case the warrenty would be void anyway.:o
