Looking tpo hire a car from La Rochelle for 14 days in July. Went to Europcar.com, forgot to update my country of residence and the quote car through at $566 - great value!!

Realised my mistake and went back and for identical booking I entered my correct country of residence as Ireland and quote came through as €548.

Thats over €150 difference based on being from Ireland. Does anyone know the logic behind the pricing models based on country of residence?

Always wondered that is there a higher insurance liability depending what country your from. I'd imagine if your from a country that drives on the other side of the road the insurance companies would charge more as they see you as a different risk.

I dunno the reasoning behind it, but I always put in Poland when checking prices and it's nearly always cheaper. I suppose they reckon "Well the Irish can afford to pay more." Never had a problem before because when you go abroad you don't bring proof of address with you anyway, so how can they prove you don't live in Poland or wherever???

I hate when stuff like that happens. Have no idea why it should make a difference.

Slightly off topic, but have you priced www.carhire3000.co.uk ? I find they are normally cheapest. Or if you are flying with Air Lingus, you can book through the AL website. The booking is with Hertz and AL give a discount code to use. I am pricing for my holiday in Sept, and that's the best value I have found.

Dymo - I thought that too but when you enter France as your country of residence [so you're hiring the car in the country you live in, its €590 and dearer than the Irish price]

number10a - Thanks for the suggestion re Poland - tried that and the price is €439 or €109 cheaper than if you live in Ireland

ncmc - thanks for suggestion of Carhire300 - I booked with Carhire3000 last year as they were far cheaper than the others at €350 for 2 weeks but this year for the same car is over €500 - but thanks for the suggestion.

so - what you can do is price the car with country of residence as USA, then when formally booking you can change your address to Ireland, the price changes to Euro but as a direct conversion for the dollar and not the 'price for the Irish'.
