Claim mortgage interest tax relief for existing mortgage?

My now-wife bought our home about 9 years ago (as a first-time buyer), and obviously her mortgage interest tax relief has now expired. We married last year, and she heard somewhere that spouses can claim interest tax relief on the now-shared property (I've never bought property before, hence no relief claimed). This relief is being phased out for new mortgages at the end of next year, and we may not move before then, hence I'd like to claim it on our current house.

Does anyone have a reference (or even first-hand experience) of this? TBH I think it's highly unlikely to be available, but every penny helps!
