Difference between consultant rate and PAYE

I have been working part time at a company as a consultant and they are now considering taking me on full time as a paye employee. I have no idea how much I should ask for as I have been working as a consultant since I left college.

As an example. If I was making 40k a year working as a full time consultant, how much would I expect to get working as a paye employee in the same job?

Out of the 40K you presumably paid your own tax and PRSI: you might expect a salary of 40K, or 10-12% less if the company expects to cover employer prsi costs from within the 40k; if there are other benefits to being an employee, e.g. pension/car, the gross pay might be less.

What would your skills command in today's market with another employer? That is a good starting point for talking to the company.
