I want to leave my job (part-time, regular sub), any way I can do it without causing offence to the school - thinking of future references, but I also really like and respect fellow staff & management. Pretty miserable, to the extent that it's starting to affect my health. Dealing with kids that are verbally abusive, had my car vandalised, and been physically hurt (had a basketball slammed in my face). I try my absolute best, but feel like nothing I do is good enough, the kids are openly hostile and disresptful. I thought I'd do anything for a teaching job, but I can't cope with this anymore. Am I really stupid to go ahead with this? I don't know if I can even get social welfare because of my personal circumstances.

I know how you feel OP, I was in that position for over two years at my last school. How long have you been working there? Is there any opportunity for some teaching hours next year?

That said, if your health is suffering because of this, maybe you are right to be thinking about this. But... if you could stick the last five weeks teaching until the summer, it would be better to have "presently teaching in.." on your CVs for jobs applications starting in September than to have "no present employment".

I really feel for you :(

OP I really feel for you, Hearing things like that makes me realise how truly undervalued teachers are. Speak with you Doctor and principal and do what's best for you.

I subbed for a couple of months two years ago and am now waiting to start the PGDE this Sept. I had a really hard time subbing and understand the stress of feeling so overwhelmed. I'm looking forward to starting the Dip but afraid the same will happen again, I hope I learned from the subbing experience ( as I was really clueless going in) but scared to death i won't be able to handle discipline issues again.

What can be done in a situation where the teacher is struggling? What are the support networks? Or who should one go to for help?

I was in a similar situation a few years ago. Verbally and physically abusive pupils. I really felt like the school management failed in their duty of care to me. They couldn't have cared less about my health or safety.

I gave a few weeks notice and left after that. I wasn't sure of getting work or even social welfare after that job, but I regarded my mental health as more important than a wage.
