So essentially, they are saying: "Thanks lads, we've enough votes."

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 70 ✭✭Creadak

So basically, if you haven't voted yet, **** off?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 162 ✭✭lithiumoxide

So theoretically, democracy is being denied?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 70 ✭✭Creadak

Sort of, if they close all polling stations because a truckload of people voted then yes. Otherwise they're just making it harder for you to vote, which is the singlemost retarded thing this SU has done all year (And I include the loss of half the hub).

    Lol. Closing polling stations early?

If someone loses by a small number of votes they would use this to dispute the entire election.

If people were planning to vote at certain times, then closing stations before advertised times may mean they can't vote. This can throw the final result.

I wonder if it's enough to recall an election immediately.

Depends on how many polling stations were open and for how long

More like go to another polling station imo

The numbers of polls cast is surprisingly high so as a result many ballot boxes are closing earlier than advertised

I see your lack of ballot pages and raise you with ballots being closed early.

    What a joke

Guys relax, they just ran out of ballot papers for Welfare for a while. Students were sent over to the Street while they got more printed for the Hub.

Ballots weren't closed early, and I know the Returning Officer was keen to get a record amount of people voting, with extra polling stations set up and everything this year.

    mountain, molehill.

    Seriously. Muppets.

I dunno. The Twitter feed said they were closing, and never said anything about temporary closure.

I think the SU should gather the facts and present a report on this.

As Returning Officer here is exactly what happened.

Since Monday the Electoral Committee and myself have been preparing ballot papers. Unlike other years we decided to open up more polling stations than before. We had predicted that we would need about 1600 ballot papers for the sabbats and proportionally less for each of the other positons. However, within three hours of ballots opening over 500 votes had been cast. Some of the committee spent most of the afternoon preparing more ballot papers to take us over the 2000 mark. Using Campus Print as our cutter for the papers, we had limited to time to get them done but got near enough to 2000 ready. It was as it got closer to 5, numbers of certain papers (mainly Clubs Officer, VP for Education and VP for Welfare) were running low. Attemps were made to reprint as many as possible, but in certain cases, some ballot stations that were quieter had to close to assist and replenish the ballot papers of busier stations.

Not once was anyone denied a vote. Everyone was instructed to either wait at most 5 mins, or head to another ballot station. Most obliged to wait and were quite happy to wait. Others went to another station. Any station which was closed was left with a sign instructing people to another building.

Do remember the committee are students volunteering their free time toward the elections. No one expected such a high turnout today, so it was a both a very good thing that ballot papers were in such massive demand but it was regrettable that people had to be delayed.

    Regards
    RJ Alford
    Returning Officer

Oh my god, it was the most obvious thing that that tweet simply meant they were out of ballot papers and were preparing more.

Some people just try their hardest to find something to moan about

Some people seriously need to get lives..fast.

This has been the best run election in DCU for years and all credit to the returning officer and the electoral committee.

No, they're saying - we are out of particular ballot papers for a few minutes, please bear with us while we sort out the problem and facilitate your vote.

Lads, please refrain from stirring - it's immature and unfair.

I've been on the electoral committee - it's a lot of work and can be very stressful - this thread is the definition of trying to make a big deal out of nothing.

Did any of you actually read the following tweet?

    http://twitter.com/#!/DCUelections/status/55994818731589632

    Sounds pretty unfair to me.

This is the tweet I saw and posted; there was no indication that it was only a temporary closure, or that it was because of a low supply of papers.

Well don't make assumptions.....you know what they say about assumptions.

Don't assume what someone writes is correct?

You extracted inept logic from an innocent tweet. the 'for now' part would have implied they were rectifying the situation - by the reaction of most people on here and who are laughing at discussing this thread, drop this one, attempting to defend your OP and line of attack of the excellent process this year is doing you no favours.

There is no "for now" part.

Secondly, the confusion was cleared up when the Returning Officer posted the details and an explanation - other people went off on one thereafter.

Thirdly, I am not attacking anyone. The RO and the Electoral Committee have done a great job and there has been an excellent contest in this year's election, with a great turnout.

Finally, I merely pointed out and queried a tweet that didn't make sense. With respect, I won't be drawn into a senseless argument about something trivial that has been cleared up. I don't know if you're trolling or whatever but either way, the discussion finished on page one, as far as I'm concerned.

Well that's the one and only thing we can agree on.

    Closed.
