oil leak after change

    hi

i replaced the oil in my e240 (1999) with the recommended type ( 0w40 fully synth) earlier in the week and it has now developed an oil leak ( drops of oil on the ground at the moment ). I have checked the sump nut and its fine , no leaks from it

I had the car for a week before changing the oil and there was no leaking during this time.

I went back over the service records and it shows that castrol magnetic ( doesn't state either semi or fully synth or type 10w40 etc etc ) was used at the last change.

now the oil i drained out was very black and thick ( subjective i know ) so i'am just wondering is it possible that lets say using a thin oil after using a 10w40 ( or other grade ) oil was used may cause a leak ? .

as a point of interest the leak is dropping down over the front anti-roll bar via the drivers side gearbox housing .

    thanks in advance

Magnatec is semi-synth (10w40 and I think 10w30) anyway - use it in some older petrol cars.

Is that pic from under the engine or the top (rocker cover gasket)?

Coming from the filter maybe? Did you grease the threads?

    hi sleepy

in the merc the oil filter sits atop the engine on the passenger side at the front. i had a good look around there alright but no signs of a leak.

just a quick update as well . I've just replaced the 0w40 fully-synthetic with 10w40 semi-synthetic i had in the shed.

I read a lot about fully synthetic causing oil leaks as one of its properties is that its rich in detergents and cleans out any oily seals that may have formed on older engines over the years.

Must be true as the oil that came out was unbelievably black for an oil that is less than a week old :eek::eek::eek:

i will update later in the week but thanks for the idea's

    regards
