There were twenty people that everyone knows about – obviously all innocent – executed as witches in Salem. The basic premise of the film is that there were a further four who actually were witches, who were killed secretly, and vowed one day to return to wreak havoc on Salem’s descendants. That’s when the movie jumps ahead to the present day and things start to go wrong…

Zombie claims this will be his bleakest film yet. He also has final cut over it which should be interesting. (as long as it doesn't result in a bloated mess like H2!)
I'm very much undecided over his cinematic ability.
This has potential of going either way.

Interesting.I think Zombie is a very talented director that tarnished himself with his 2 versions of Halloween.

    Bleak is good though,verrrry good.

Have you got a link to the story?

    Edit
Just IMDB'ed it.Sheri is in this one too.

I love 'The Devils Rejects' so look forward to this!

I'm a fan of House of 1000 Corpses and The Devils Rejects so I'll be keeping a close eye on who this film develops as it sounds like an interesting concept and Zombie does 'bleak' very well IMO.

I'd agree with the comments on Sherri Moon though, she is a piss poor 'actress' and is always the most annoying character in Zombies movies. She even manages to annoy the hell out of me in the 3 minute trailer for Werewolf Women of the SS with her typically annoying high pitched wails. Great ass though ;)

There's a preview of it this Friday night in the IFI, one of the late night screenings they do with Horrorthon.

Yeah, really looking forward to the Friday Fright Night screening at the IFI. Although I wasn't a big fan of the film itself, the remake of Maniac was shown there last week and there was a good atmosphere to the night. IFI even threw in a great offer for chips & chicken wings for a €5 which was a steal. Hope they do the same this week. As for Lords Of Salem, personally it looks pretentious as hell, but you never know...

I read a review from a friend who I hold in high esteem when it comes to horror and he loved it so I will be seeing this as soon as I can.

I'm half going for the soundtrack too, he said it was superb. The Devils Rejects soundtrack is one of my favorite compilation albums of all time.

I think that a lot of people will approach this expecting a generic slasher tale. While I've yet to see the film, the imagery and trailer suggest a film that is about the atmosphere created more than the onscreen mayhem. It's very reminiscent of the recent Giallo homage Amer and knowing Zombie, as poor as the film could be it will be never less than beautiful to look at.

I got my copy of this the other day and watched it last night. It's pretty good, very atmospheric and with a good use of music. The third act is disappointing - after building up tension and dread so effectively, it just sort of evaporates. But it's still definitely worth a watch, and i'm inclined to agree that it's Zombie's most ambitious film so far.

It treads similar territory to Berberian Sound Studio, as far as atmosphere and character arcs go.

Finically saw this and it's up there with the best that the genre has to offer. A truly unique tale that's told in a restrained and adult manner. It's been a long time since a film has managed to create such an unrelentingly grim sense of fireboding and while the end does squander the buildup it's still a magnificent piece of work. Zombie's imagery is exceptional and called to mind Kubrick, Argento, Polanski, etc yet it never feels like imitation. The first entry into number 5 features one of cinemas most mind blowingly beautiful moments and there's really not a single moment in the film that you couldn't hang in a gallery.

It's the most nature, restrained and intelligent horror I've seen in quite sometime and the lack of gore and jump scares is refreshing. It's a film all about mood and atmosphere and anyone looking for something a little different is in for a treat. I really hope that Zombie's decision to move away from horror is temporary as I really want to see what he does next.

Tbh I wasnt terribly impressed with this, maybe as I was waiting so long to see it my expectations went through the roof or something

As one poster has said here, starts off well, gets even better, stays good, then just goes all over the place imho - kind of reminded me of RZs Halloween 2, his first effort was fantastic imho but then went all over the place again for the 2nd.

Think he needs to get back to his House of 1000 corpses roots, and the first Halloween movie he did, sequels dont seem to be his thing it seems:confused:

Still, Id gladly watch his next movie for the simple reason that the music, feel, and general look of his movies are always awesomely good :D

For those who found this wanting, there's an interesting fanedit by the name of Comorbid that condenses it down to a ~1 hour silent film; it's certainly more effective in terms of bringing its narrative to a conclusion rather than sort of petering out like Zombie's original film does - might be worth having a look.

I saw this a good while ago, now. I was excited to see it, and felt disappointed. What could have been a great movie fell flat because RZ seems to be unable to allow tension to keep building. Every time a scene is building, something really stupid or immature happens which completely destroys the whole thing. The worst offence was
    the scene in the Church
. It could have been really creepy, and then the mood is killed because RZ doesn't know how to make the tension hit. Same at the end. Could have been so much more if it wasn't a RZ film :(:( .

In saying all that, I do think House..... and The Devils Rejects are very good films of their genre, and Rejects gets a bit of a bad rep' because it's been lumped into a genre it doesn't belong, horror. It's not a horror movie. If it's anything, it's a really fucked up drama, which is why it works. It's quite unique, and makes you empathise with the bad guy, kinda.
