Can't believe Boro didn't make that list.

Is this not just a list of the 30 biggest stadiums in Europe and not actually the 30 most supported clubs?

    Average attendances.

It's still based on stadium size tho. What if a top team has a small stadium but sells out every game, are they smaller than a top team with a massive stadium but are yet to sell-out one game?

If anything it should be based on attendances, travelling support, merchandise sales..etc all rolled together.

Like here is a list, based on merchandise sales ( http://www.footballtradedirectory.com/news/2011/february/liverpool-top-united-in-merchandising.html )

    1. Real Madrid
    2. Barcelona
    3. Liverpool
    4. Bayern Munich
    5. Olympique Marseille
    6. Manchester United
    7. AC Milan
    8. Inter Milan
    9. Olympique Lyon
    10. Fenerbahce

Never really noticed how big some German clubs (Frankfurt, Hannover, Nurnberg) are until I saw this:

Best supported league in the world IIRC. Every team over there seems to pull massive crowds.

Cheap tickets, amazing atmosphere and great stadiums have really shown to actually pull in supports. Model for Ireland (LoI and International team), Scotland etc to follow.

It's because the majority of teams are owned by the fans imo and as they're fans, they set the prices they seem reasonable.

    Some good football too.

Average attendance as a percentage of total capacity would be a better metric, tbh.

There also happens to be 80m or so people in Germany.

Lazio and Roma has potential to fill almost 73000 and are not on the list so no its not a list of the biggest stadiums. You want the link below.

lol I wouldn't base how much support from a shirt sale article. The figures are completely misleading by the fact that the G+G campaign saw a decrease in sales by 10%. In fact if you look at market research before that Man United, based on the same companies figures were leading the shirt sales charts. I wouldn't base it on that. They're useless for the intended purpose to which you wish to use them.

And their ticket prices are sehr cheap. Iirc you can get to see Dormund for €15 (standing kop [25,000 capacity] and includes trams from city centre).

Actually the stand behind the goal is for season tickets only ;)
But you're rightm, the cheap prices do help, teams in second and third divisions still pull massive crowds (And I'm talking 30-40.000, easily).

In fairness, cheap tickets don't explain everything. Most match tickets for Frankfurt Eintracht (14 in this list) go for between 30-50 euro.

www.soccerway.com has league stadium attendances/capacity and average %. Far more useful.

14th in the league. 24th in this list.
We either must be very loyal or masochists.
    Probably both.

hertha are in the second division and still pull over 42,000. when newcastle were in 2nd division did they sell out st.james park much?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,551 ✭✭✭✭Oat23

Great to see Hertha right there, in the second division and still big attendance. Enough to be higher than a lot of top flight clubs.

Given the 2 lists I can only guess that you support Liverpool?

Only reason why anyone would bring up such a list

Herta Berlin have an average of 42,000 in a huge 74,000 stadium and thats a lot of empty seats to pay for. The rest are nowhere by comparison -

Very happy to see Sunderland up there, especially at a time when our (lack of) attendance is coming under scrutiny.

koln and newcastle seem so alike in a way. look at their attendances yet what have they achieved?

Newcastle have always had fantastic support. The club really don't deserve the attendances they get, same goes for Sunderland.

Well no, it's not that, as I would agree that there are clubs with support as good as ours, if not better as both lists show.

Just saying that let's say if a club had a massive stadium and chose top give out every ticket at €1 every game and regularly sold out, would that mean that they are the best supported team?

You can;t just pick one detail as a criteria of being the best supported.

Anyways, with many teams now protesting against owners, how accurate are the lists?

attendances dont mean everything tho. if they did bundesliga teams would be the most dominant in europe.

I know that mate, and the north-east clubs are probably just about the best example of how great support doesn't equal success.

Amazing to see Celtic up there given the opposition we usually play and the dross served up during the past couple of seasons. If things continue to progress we should be higher next season.

As far as I know, there is a capacity of 28000 with 26000 season ticket holders. But never mind, the Westfalenstadion is always a great place to visit

The Luzhniki Stadium in Moscow has a capacity of 80,000 but neither Spartak or Torpedo are on the list.

Stadium is always nearly empty when Spartak aren't playing in a derby or a big European night

And of course, big attendence doesn't mean success, but the germans have copped on it's better to have 60k at a game at €15 a ticket than 20k at €45 a ticket.
And lets see how they do when financial fair play kicks in.

TBH I dont think Germany should be Irelands model. We should be looking to Norway or Denmark.

I'm not surprised by German League crowds -> Schalke in particular get huge crowds. They also have a massive pyramid system so every town village, city and hamlet could in throey get into the Bundesliga. Berlin by itself has loads of teams.

Not sure if it's been mentioned, but AFAIK germany still have terraces. Makes a huge difference to capacity of the stadium, price of a ticket, and the general atmosphere of attending a game.

Yeah, they have terraces for domestic league games and fixed joints which allow seats to be put in for european games.
