I'm probably an idiot for not knowing the answer to this but...

I'm running my iPad on 3G right now, or that is I've turned wifi off and usually the 3G symbol appears in the left hand corner. Today however there's an "E" symbol where the "3G" usually is.

    What is the E for?:o

It's stands for Edge. Essentially a **** data network with low speeds typically found in areas where 3G becomes unavailable.

Thank you both a million! That's good to know. It is exceptionally slow alright.:(

    Another stupid question...
Does this mean that my 3G credit is gone then?

No, you have data credit. 3G will run through your data faster than Edge. It's like broadband versus dial-up (not exactly but same theory). Edge will let you download simple pages when there isn't a 3G signal to be had.

If you've got a smartphone it works exactly the same way.

Hey, at least the OP is on a network with Edge. Vodafone doesn't have it, so if you can't get 3G, you fall back to even ****ier GPRS.
