Hi Lads any help would be appreciated. I can't open the bonnet unless I use a vice grips, my car is in for NCT and won't pass because of this, my local dealer quoted me 140 euro to put a new lever in, is there anything I could do to fit on to the lever so I could then open the bonnet. The car is a Honda Civic.

So it's the plastic lever inside the car that's the issue, not the latch under the bonnet?

To change this is a bit tricky as they'll want to change the cable which means the car will have to be jacked up, some stuff removed etc.

You wanna have a go yourself? There are instructions on the net.

Yes it's the plastic lever that is broken and all I want is something that I could grip onto it so I could open bonnet without vice grips.

It's mentioned here that apparently it's not that hard to fix.

Yes, the NCT staff must be able to just jump in and pull the bonnet to access the engine bay without any effort.....no pilers or vice grips even if the cable itself works using one of them.
Just buy a new pull cable or handle they're an easy fit even for a novice ,disconnect the cable from the catch on the locking panel and trace it back to the bulkhead ,get inside the car and pull through under the dash to the handle side, fitting is the same but in reverse, simples!

I don't want to replace the whole thing, all I want is to put something on where the lever used to be so it will pass the NCT.

I had to replace mine myself before on a civic, the cables stretch easily or something, why not just replace it so that it works? It will save you hassle in the long run. The cable is a bit expensive for what it does.

It is expensive and I know I'll have to replace it but I don't have the spare cash at the moment so I'll figure it out to stick something on it.
