Dead nerve

Hi, last week a piece/corner of my upper rear tooth broke off. It had a filling from about 15 years back and the tooth was fine to look at but was rotten inside. My dentist drilled out the tooth and more or less rebuild what was missing with filler and has been fine since.

He used some sort of apparatus like a mini vice-grips that he pushed up into the tooth and proceeded to turn a knob, push and turn again, he done this 3-4 times before he filled it, what was that for?

He told me that he thinks the nerve is dead and that I would have needed root canal & crown treatment but the filling will do the job.

I couldn't fault the dentist in any way but I'm wondering if the nerve is dead will the tooth go black and need to be pulled anyway or will I need a root canal down the line? I had no pain before or after the filing.

    Thanks,

Highly unlikely you may loose this tooth, your dentist just thinks it may need a root treatment in the future, if causing no problem forget about it and attend regular check uos . If the tooth gets troublesome attend the dentist ASAP as you probably need a root treatment.

    Thanks,

That was a band and holder to allow him place the filling in place.
