The long awaited replacement for the Civic has been spied testing. First launched back in 2005, the current Civic, which is manufactured in Swindon, still remains a popular hatchback choice despite the dated design.

Honda have already launched the replacements for the US saloon and sports coupe models at the Detroit motor show in January, but executives from Honda UK were quick to point out the American revisions were solely for the US market and completely separate from our European Civic.

The latest prototype reveals what the front grille, door handles and the entire roofline will look like and more importantly a pair of very headlights with a similar design to those featured in the new US Civics.

Judging by the dimensions of the prototye, it will remain around the same size as the current model with many of the parts being carried over. Power will continue to come from the four-cylinder 1.4 and 1.8 litre petrol units and the 2.2 turbodiesel engine delivering between 80 and 140 bhp.

There are also plans to use the current 115bhp 1.5 litre petrol hybrid setup too, adding the new family hatch alongside the likes of the CR-Z, Insight and Jazz to Honda’s range of hybrids. The next generation of the Japanese hatch is due late this year or in spring 2012 and should retail from around £16,000.

looks about as stupid as the current one in those photos

Looks the exact same as the current model except for maybe the door mirrors. Would not suprise me if the Autoexpress journo just digged those photos from their archives.

The first photo has a 3 Series E90 model in the background, which means it can't be a test mule from 2004...

Arrgh, the look of the Civic is a pet peeve of mine. Why can't Honda leave it alone? There's been at least 5 completely different looking Civics in the past 8 years - it's a farce. The best looking one is 2007 model imo.

There has been only 2 generations of Civic in the last 10 years. 01 - 06 and 06 to present. Civic models usually have a life cyle of 5 years.

Maybe you are confusing the different varients of each generation? Saloons share no body parts or styling with their sister hatchbacks as the saloons are designed and built in Japan, hatchbacks are designed and built in Europe.

In fairness the current model looks different to the normal Golf boxes etc. and is quite unique looking. The fact that you hate it actually supports that as it evokes some emotion.

Looks like someone got the previous model and got creative with some tape..

Amazing what AutoExpress can glean from a photo

The long awaited replacement for the Civic has been spied testing. fair enough

    Auto Express annoys me.

    Story should have ran:

Disguised Honda Civic hatchback spied. Looks pretty much the same as the old one. We have no more info as of yet.

    :D

That's no new model, it's just a standard current Civic with some tape on it sent out to fool some slack jawed auto hack. It worked.

looks like someone got drunk and tried to do a DIY wrap

Hmm... it's always hard to tell what it looks like from the mule wrapping.

But, it seems similar shape to the current model. Some of the things I noticed:

    1. The rear door handles are integrated into the rear-door window frame like current model
    2. It looks like the split glass tail is still there.
    3. I would imagine there is still two exhaust pipes to keep the look balanced
    4. The front lights got an overhaul they are almost like the new accord with the angles.

TBH - they probably decided to "refresh" the current shape.

I would imagine the 1.8 and 1.4 will remain as the petrols, albeit some tuning for emmissions, etc. Can't see a new power plant here.

The 2.2 diesel will probably borrow from the new Accord and become their i-DTEC version (150 bhp)

Nothing on the Type-R but that's normally 1 year after the model introduction. It'll need some serious overhaul to up the ante from 201PS and moderate suspension to compete with other hot hatches (e.g. Focus RS)

I think I read somewhere that the next Civic Type R is to be a hybrid.

IMO, model cycles are getting way too short. Cars these days are getting so advanced there really should be no need to replace them until the design is at least 7-8 years old.

It seems to me like only yesterday since this generation Civic was launched.

Presume they're releasing the one that's been in the 'states.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,727 ✭✭✭Midnight_EG

It's more than likely just a facelift of the FN/FD Civics, just like the EK9 had a facelift in late 98/early 99, same as the DC2 in 98 and the DC5 in 2005 along with special versions of the EP3 as well!

That is the Civic Si which is built and sold exclusively in the US afaik. Don't think there are any plans to sell it in Europe. The Si replaced the Civic coupe that we got here years ago afaik.
