    Hi

I can see on rsa.ie and hear in radio about new rules with provisional drivers licences. On the pages says:
Essential Driver Training (EDT) for learner drivers becomes a legal requirement in Ireland on 4 April 2011 which means that any person getting their first learner permit with a start date on or after 4 April 2011 must successfully complete 12 hours of driver training over a six month period (average of one lesson every two weeks) before they can sit their driving test.

My question is - my wife done her test on 26th of March and received her driving licence on 4th of April but with dates from 1st of April till 31 of March 2013.

So question is - does she need to have this driving lessons ?

    Tom

I think you answered your question yourself.

She recieved it ON the 4th of April (Start date 4th April) , so yes she has to do 12 hours.

Is the 4th of April actually on the license? Otherwise it sounds to me they she doesn't have to do them. On the radio on the 4th, they mentioned that any licenses in the system were ok.

When you say she did her test do you mean Theory test and got her Learner permit ?

Or she did her driving test and got her driving Licence ?

    Hi Rob

She done her theory test on 26th of March and passed.
Now received provisional licence with dates from 1st of April till 31st of March 2013 with date of issue of 04-04-2001

Start date is before 4th April so she should be ok, It maybe worth double checking directly with RSA, drop them an email and they usually answer pretty quickly

    Also this may help

Her licence is issued on 1st April, so legally she doesn't need to do the training.

But it's strongly adviced she does it, because how else is she going to learn to drive?

The same way everyone else in the country has done until this was introduced?

    Hi all

I got e-mail from RSA with confirmation of above - she don't need to do the driving.

And she can drive fine - done driving lessons already.

How could she have done driving lessons, if she just applied for her provisional now?

When I see what's happening on the roads, I think that way of learning doesn't really work.

In Polan You can go for driving lessons and then apply for driving licence.

You need to drive at least 20-30 hours with instructor and then You can attend theory and driving test (most of the time on the same day) and after passing that You have full driving licence ;-)

She done 1st part but had no time to apply to exam

OK. In that case it perfectly makes sense.

I got reply from Licensing Queries <LicensingQueries@rsa.ie>
    RE: Essential Driver Training
    Tom
As the start date is prior to 4th April it is not a requirement that she do the driver training.

The indo yesterday claimed that they are going to indtroduce mandatory motorway lessons as well. After a driver passes their test and is an 'R' qualified driver, they will be forced to do two motorway lessons with an instructor. I'm guessing these will be in addition to the new EDT lessons.

Not too many Motorways down here in Kerry ... so that will be an interesting one for ADI's to implement
