Walker Saorview STB problem

Has anyone on here bought a Walker WP11DTB STB and does it suffer from the same problem as mine?

This thing is driving me nuts and walker's customer care seem to be as much use as a hole in a bucket they are near impossible to contact, and via e-mail is a complete waste of time, and then they believe it to be RTE's fault and this is ongoing now since early Feb when I bought it.

The STB if left in stand by mode powers up and takes over the TV at least 5 or 6 times every hour, it also powers up the Thompson TV it's connected to in the bedroom so has to be plugged out constantly making it almost useless. It powers up for about 10-15 seconds then powers off again :(

I have been in contact with Walker a few times with a woman named Monica who last said some guy named Brian is now looking into the problem but I haven't heard anymore from them in over a month now! She believes it may be "something RTE is sending out on its signal" although then she said that mine was only the second one they had heard of with this complaint .

I was going to take it back to where I bought it but thats about a 2 hour drive round trip and I'm not overly confident by walker's response to my problem so far that it's not the same story on all their boxes :(

sounds more like the remote control - you tried removing the batteries from that to see if you still get the problem?

i'd find out where walker are based and bring the box up to them. they would have to deal with you. the longer you leave it the guantee will run out

It's not the remote, It's obviously a fault that Walker are aware of but don't know how or may-be they just don't want to solve! These STBs should probably be recalled. Are Walker's just importers of these I think they are made by Vestel?

I am going to try the box with out an antenna connected to it today and if the fault remains that should eliminate their excuse that it's an RTE thing ;) If it was an RTE thing all STBs would do this surely not just the two they heard of. I wonder is it a firmware problem and there is no update available?

Just heard a click over in the corner bingo on it's come without the antenna so RTE may well be innocent in this case ;)

Might have to waste another 5 minutes of my life and ring their customer care after lunch :)

    Hi Jamescc

You probably do have the same problem as mine just that you may not have noticed it as your TV itself may not power on like my Thompson does!

Another member who wants to stay anonymous for now on here PMed me earlier he said he has a batch of 10 of them all suffering from the exact same problem. I believe it may be a bug in its firmware and they have no updated firmware available for this unit.

The TV transmitter site has no relevance to this problem as it happens even with the antenna disconnected so is definitely a fault within the STB itself

Btw I am connecting mine to the TV via scart , so to watch any other signal source i.e a sat rx it needs to be disconnected from the power supply when not in use so its a pain as present, if you're in the market for a STB I would avoid this unit until this issue is sorted.

Anyone on here got a Triax STB and if so any problems? Starting to look like I'll be returning this one for a refund soon ;)

    @ Canned Heat

Just seen your post. I also have this unit and like a previous post I receive the signals from 3 Rock. To date the unit has not given me any trouble but I have only been using it for a few weeks. I do know that it switches on for a few seconds by it's self and then but not very often - unlike yours. My unit is connected to an LG television by scart but the TV does not switch on.

However it may be of interest to you that a friend is having some problems with his Walker at present. His Walker has started to freeze at times and it switches on about once every half hour. This Walker depends on Mount Leinster and of course it could be having reception problems due to 'lift' conditions at present. Only time will tell.

Brian from Walker called me (and also the member here with 10 units) earlier today he said they were alerted to this thread by someone from RTE ;) they are going to replace our units this week and are taking the current ones to investigate the problem they have.

BTW, mine is connected via scart and with the Thomson TV it powers up the TV so is a right pain in the middle of the night :(

Walker, Brian tells me have just released a WP12DTB version, I'm not sure if this will replace or add to Walkers range alongside the WP11DTB model that we have.

I'll keep you posted when I get the replacement STB hopefully it cures the problem!

My STB is working perfect other than this very annoying problem, no freezing or any other issues to report.

I reckon they'll find the problem confined to only people using scarts and that is why so few people have noticed it.

scarts can send wake up messages. this is done via pin 8. If you have a spare scart lead try cutting pin 8 and see if it happens.

or if you have a second scart input on the tele use that. the second scart may not have the wake up feature.

Walker sent me a replacement for the WP11DTB of the newer model WP12DTB-R on good Friday and delighted to say that the issues are resolved on this model! :)

They are also going to send me the firmware update for it on a USB stick as soon as it's available. ;)

It also hasn't the very bright blue LED (the brightest LED I've ever seen) that the previous model had, I had to be cover it with some black tape :(

    I can highly recommend the WP12DTB-R ;)

My Walker Saorview STB suffers from the same problem. It has become a major issue since I recently bought an automatic HDMI switch. The Walker box wakes up every hour or so and takes over the tv from the PS3 or whatever, driving my son mad. I'm going to call them ...

hi we have a set top box that is haunted as i call it.It also comes on and off when it suits itself taking over everything else connected to it but thats another days work. i say that as it has taken almost 3 months to sort out the problem of a new walker tv we bought. Aertel took over a minute to load each and every page would crack u up. we hounded them by email and phone every other day and the famous brian eventually sent us out a new tv. it a bit better but still slow so no more walker products for us
