    ..in Munich.

Invited to a surprise 40th Birthday Party for a friend, we had to hide and busy ourselves for the day, and I headed to BMW Welt and the BMW Museum.

Fabulous. Even you don't like cars, motorbikes, engines - as a building, and as an source of entertainment, it's great.

So, BMW-Welt is like a super showroom mixed with a bit of science museum, kids show, and a splash of art as well. What's not to like ?

Of course, this isn't a first time for me: I visited Porsche's version two years ago, and patently the German manufacturers are on a competition to outdo each other with their showcase building's, so let's start there.

    The BMW Welt Building:

First, they hired an architect. He obviously cost a fortune - well, judging by the drawing he did anyway..........

    1241400523_vEC3w-M.jpg

Naturally, a bunch of paddies interpretated it, and it came out like this: :D

    1241395091_svRBv-M.jpg

    1241395051_3Acpy-M.jpg

    Inside, it looks like this:

    1241405480_3LDfA-M.jpg

    1241405710_pbGXT-M.jpg

The museum, reached by a bridge over the road, is that mushroom shaped building to the right of the round tower building's.

OK, so to the cars then.........

BMW Welt showcases current model cars and bikes, and is sprinkled with science displays (car-related, of course), kids play area, playstation game thingies, and so forth. You can also have a meal there in the snack area or formal restaurant (and reasonably priced as well btw......). They have huge, ample parking (not free  ), locker's to stow your stuff, and you can stroll out to the Olympic park outside the door, as well.

The car factory itself is across the road, and does factory tours Mon - Fri.

I didn't take pics of current cars: you can see them in any dealer's, but they had their newest bike toy on display: the BMW K1600GT & GTL - both powered by straight 6 engines. Fab.

    Big Bus
    1241394199_ySLsa-M.jpg

Big inline 6 is very compact, and canted well forward - no wider than their current 1300cc inline 4 actually.
    1241393996_HYSC3-M.jpg

And with a touch of Flash Gordon at the back........the pipes......
    1241394362_MSjve-M.jpg

Even the dash looks like a cars:

    1241405911_oJbMr-M.jpg

Note: I should add: for transport for the weekend, I rented a spanking new BMW F800R:
    1241392562_j9zku-M.jpg

edit about the parking. It's free if you're on a bike. Well, the barrier only reaches halfway across the lane, now doesn't it ?? )

    Right. Cars.

I'm not a big BMW fan, really, but I do admire good engineering. And you have to hand it to them on the engine front:

They do make great 6's. V-8's. V-10's. Great diesels.

But for me, something special is this: the inline 4 1.6-based turbo from old F1 era. 800bhp from a 316-based engine - hey, like I said: you have to admire it..

    1241397396_8rdA2-M.jpg

Early-era stuff is even more wondrous:
    14-cylinder radial engine, anyone.... ?
    1241397909_9eBnh-M.jpg
That's Mrs Gtt, btw - she reckoned there was a miss on cyl #9 :) She should know: she's not unknown to rip the (cylinder) head off an unsuspecting .....suspect herself ! :P

This photo explains why F1 clutches only do two starts........anyone who's ever owned a 50cc or bigger motorbike will be right at home here.....

This is what you might call the 7-series lounge.....

    1241398582_T5v3J-M.jpg

Never saw one of these before, but I love it: BMW 507

    1241400957_aJAUz-M.jpg

This is Mrs Gtt giving a mathematics lesson: what's the difference between these two cars ?

    Answer: tell you later............. :p

    1241401125_rymwn-M.jpg

    I love the Z1
    1241401279_M7cGN-M.jpg

....which brought up an interesting point by Mrs Gtt: you buy almost any convertible sports car, and it will, invariably, always look good, and age well.............the same cannot be said, however, for saloon's or coupé's....

She's like that, she is. Pearls of wisdom :P

In contemplative mood.........tea tray spoiler, anyone ? Halford's would be so proud......... :D

    1241402181_YjeRW-M.jpg

...probably illustrates Mrs Gtt's 'ageless beauty' comment best.....even if it does have a Z3 in it.......:P

    1241402754_WvnVN-M.jpg

OK, so the the Art Cars............hmmm .....I'm not so sure about these, tbh..........paintwork 'designed' by famous artists from around the world, over the years - this year they're all back 'home' under the one roof:

    1241403198_Ct3Hw-M.jpg

Not everyone's cup of tea, really.........
    1241403661_PweXs-M.jpg

    1241403444_NJApT-M.jpg

So, next time you spot a naff paintjob, beware: it could be worth 10's of 1000's of Euro's...............

    Still, everyone love's a Classic:

    1241401539_nqYfb-M.jpg

    1241401799_Kyggq-M.jpg

Which reminds me: what do you do when you find you've already used the illustrious M1 moniker, and want to adorn your 2011 super-coupé ?? Simple, re-arrange the letters: hence the new 1-series, M-version, is called.........the 1 M Coupé !! And yes, it was in BMW Welt (didn't think to take a pic, tbh........)

    Ageless. Probably priceless as well.......
    1241401944_va57a-M.jpg

I have a newpaper cutting of when that car came out, and Mr Keane had one: 1979 iirc........and back then it cost IEP£40,000............

Now this, this mad paint........this I like.........

Good thread. I really like the paint job on the last car, what was it used for? Looks like a touring car.

yeah, most of the Art cars are racecars of one kind or another.

Is it the difference in engine size in cc? its not the difference in units built anyway.

Great pics btw, I was in the old museum a couple of times some great stuff there too.

So that's where all those De Loreans ended up, they painted them orange and called them BMW M1s ;)

The round towers visible through the windows in one of the early photos I believe are the headquarters of BMW, the building is designed to represent a four-cylinder engine.
