Iphone 4 help...

My girlfriend bought a 32gig iphone 4 today, it was sold as factory unlocked. She had already bought a brand new unwanted upgrade 16gb iphone 4 hoping to get it unlocked. When i got it home i put in her meteor microsim, but got the message:

The simcard inserted in this iphone does not aappear to be supported. only compatible sim cards from a supported carrier may be used to activate iphone. Please insert sim card that came with your iphone or visit a supported carriers store to recieve a replacement sim card.

We then tried both a 3 pay as you go card, and an o2 card, and both worked, so the phone does seem to be unlocked, The meteor microsim is working in another phone so that cant be the problem either. Can anyone shed soem light on why its not working? Am i missing something really obvious? Or is she now stuck with 2 iphones that have cost 900 in total that cant be used?

there are two kind of unlocks for an iphone.

    1. factory unlocked - only supplied by apple and store.apple.com.

    2. supported carriers unlocked - the phone is unlocked to used on any official iphone carrier, in this country that's vodafone, o2 and three.

    i'm gathering it's the latter...

After contacting the original seller he said the phone was bought on vodafone billpay, and vodafone unlocked it for him. So it looks like its only unlocked to supporting carriers? Any idea of a way around this? thanks.

I'd highly doubt it is. I just got a iPhone 4 off somebody today which was locked to O2 then unlocked by o2 and my meteor SIM works fine.

IF Vodafone unlocked it, then it should work on any network.
Contact apple and they will tell you exactly the status of it.

ok, so i've contacted apple, and they say its locked to three, but refused to stay on the phone for more than 2 minutes unless i buy applecare for 70 euro! Top customer service. Then i let the seller know, and he said he bought it from another guy, and gave me his phone number, so i googled the number, and found the original add on donedeal (link) -
    http://webcache.googleusercontent.com/search?q=cache:eiEIf2vMt5oJ:m.donedeal.ie/for-sale/phones/1751297+0871772844&cd=1&hl=en&ct=clnk&gl=ie&client=firefox-a&source=www.google.ie
the original seller has it listed as being locked to vodafone but was offering to unlock it which backs up the story i got from the person i bought it from. What i dont understand is if its unlocked why would apple not know that? Not really sure where to go from here.

what os is it on, i'd say it was sold software unlocked using a tool called ultrasnow, this unlock id dependant on what baseband version is on the phone, if its anything higher than 01.59.00 ya cant unlock it with ultrasnow

to check the baseband go to settings and then about, scroll down to modem firmware, thats the baseband

if ya updated it in itunes theres no way to unlock it without paying three to unlock it

its 4.10.01 on version 4.3.1. I have unlocked some older gen iphones and ipods with ultrasn0w, but didnt realise it was possible at all on ip4?

Not meaning to hijack but, I bought an Iphone 4 on adverts last December. It was an unwanted three upgrade (Apparently)
If I call three will they unlock it for me? and if they charge to do it; how much?

PAYG once €150 credit has been bought.
Billpay - They will only unlock it for the original account holder once the contract has expired

Both ways a charge of €25.....
