Event for newer/younger players?

Hey, I know I'll get some stick about this :(

Me and friends have been talking about setting up an event or themed day that would be focused more for younger/newer players (or players who are fans of games or movies  :p )
It would be based around games from xbox/ps3 or on movies (action movies, not dark knight or Kings speech :P ). We think it'd be a bit o fun but might also help newer players (Specially those who also like this stuff) to become more addict-...I mean... find it more enjoyable...and addicting :p

This thread's just to get a general feel for what people think about it. If you don't like the idea of people associating Computer games with Airsoft, alright, you're entitled to your opinion but please don't be too harsh :o (joke, most of us airofters are sound  )

Personally, I tried stuff from games the first time I played airsoft so I think it aint a half bad idea.

Again, just give an honest opinion as criticism can only help make it better :)
oh, and nothing about this is official, we want a general feel for it first and than we'll see about actually doing it :)
Thanks a million for any input

I'd like to think any event is welcoming to new players, if you're old enough to skirmish, any event is open to you... The Idea that one must be experienced to get ones foot in the door is untrue. You're very welcome :)

Theme games are a great Idea, and a lot of sites do run them. My old local did a battlefield game a few times, capturing and running up flags at 'spawn points' it went down rather well.

Right, good replies so far :D
@Firekitten : I know what you're saying and I agree, my first event was great, remember it like it was a few weeks ago....oh wait ;)
I just feel that hving a game basd on a ...game:confused: would be great fun for new players...not to mention those who like the games ;)
Personally, when I 1st went airsoft, I related LOADS of it to Cod and Battlefield, so (Unless i'm an odd exception :p (Don't you comment on this Dave  ) ) I think it'd be a fun way to play :)

What do you have in mind that would make it seem more based on a game like COD or... (can't think of any other games)?

Because Airsoft skirmishes and COD online are basicly the same game objective wise.

If I reecall, someone posted somewhere on this forum ages back with two games from those crazy crazy Ivans ...

Fallout AND Stalker airsoft in the Ukraine, going to great lengths with location and load-outs. For those of you who might not spot the implied point here; the Ukraine.

    Crazy, crazy Ivan.

Fallout could work in a sortof LARP/Airsoft way... Lemming isnt getting a gattling laser though.

If my limited experience o fFallout3 is anything to go by, it looks like a pretty neo-gay Mad Max experience with leather and gimp masks

We're thinking of using specific rules, game modes....and people can feel free to dress up a bit(and are encouraged too :D )
We're still thinking of idea's on how to make it more like Cod and....other games :o:p
We might use missions from games so use a halo mission but leave out power armour and overshields :p Or an idea from Battlefield
    Any suggestions are appreciated :)

Oh, and admitedly, Fallout airsoft would be great :D Until someone tries VATS, than it becomes embarrassing :o

We dont like the idea of one life games but we do have a VERSION of S&D that was inspired by Hurt locker :D Just need equipment :(

You can carry your friends around at an airsoft game if you wish. Simply ask them, some people call it playing pony... ;)

Or we could be hardcore painful and play stretcher race through a muddy river bed.... if you want to get that silly :P

What about a halo teamed game? Think of the fun to be had!!! We could have some people as the UNSC and others as the aliens!................................. I'll get my coat :(

Ha, yeah, spartan armour's rare these days (as oppose to how common it was last year  )
We can use mission idea's from Halo...maybe something like One team splits up too capture 3 objectives...Only for the flood to show up ;):D
Seriously, any suggestions, be it about what games we should look at to Game modes we can play, feel free to suggest it :)

Ok, guess who's on the strecher under the river ;) ?
Seriously now,I now what he's on about, he's one of the friends who I've been talking to about this :eek!:
The idea we had is that you have to bring you're vip to a evac site....but he can't walk :D (Bit of rope should solve that ;) )
He can shoot, but only when he aint moving, so to be honest, very like the macmillan mission

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,205 ✭✭✭Firekitten

Not sure what the mcmillan mission is, but VIP extraction games are fairly common.

Usual format gives the VIP a pistol only for defence, and the escort team has to have a hand on him to move him... carrying him or tying him up is a bit far.

Same goes for downed pilot, (Find them then extract) And other similar modes like rescue the tellytubby or SAS extract garry glitter from a teenage boy... I mean Vietnam.... etc.

Other favourites are as I said earlier, battlefield style capture points... (Really works well in airsoft.)

or evac and hold style missions where a team must reach a certain location with as many players as possible in a time limit to 'extract' by helo.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 171 ✭✭captaindanwaldo

I like the idea of several teams. not just two. Slightly inspired by the multi player game americas army both teams would appear as US when viewing their own character but when they confront their opponent they appear as opfor to each other. 3 teams. each is told to capture and defend target but teams can only attack the team defending the target. ie the defending team is always out numbered 2-1 or whatever you set the odds as. whoevers left defending after 15 mins is the winner? Higher the odds the better the teams...

And what about the 'no russian' mission, id play that!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 565 ✭✭✭DoBhrionn

Just throwing an idea out there.... but, what about some tv shows......like Stargate (SG-1, Atlantis, Universe) for example. The different uniforms which are easily made up and some of the guns are easily gotten in airsoft. Like in Atlantis the weapon of choice by the main squad was the P90. In the other series it was the already common enough M4 that was used, some had slight variations :P
It might turn out cheaper than turning up like Master Chief ;)....
Overall it's a good idea for meshing console games, it'd bring more to the community :D

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,152 ✭✭✭Inari

An important point being made is that Airsoft and computer/video games are already remarkably similar, and that any dedicated event to attract younger/newer players would be mostly to do with advertising as opposed to changing the game structure.

What I mean by that is circulating flyers, building up a facebook community, and getting people aware of the event. Not just a run of the mill flyer etc; specifically targeted to your market i.e. promoting the game/movie element of Airsoft.

Designing suitable games is the easy part (enforcing is the harder part) - scenario play is by far (in my opinion) the most enjoyable, and having achievable objectives will add to the game element, whereas impossible odds play more to the movie side of things.

I think, and correct me if I'm wrong here... but the whole thread is actually striving for OBJECTIVE based airsoft, as Inari said... you keep referencing game plots, and the reality is a LOT of airsoft around the world plays like that week in week out... not just attack and defend, capture the flag etc...

I think there is a general desire for more interesting scenarios, and longer games perhaps. Something people can get more involved in storywise... plenty of Irish sites run these, and I think a lot more would benefit from following thier lead. It is about publicity.... younger players can be interested if the game interests them, however, basing things on video games can be detremental in my eyes.
The whole coddysofter attitude became quite prevelant on the UK scene when modern warfare was released, and it did more harm than good... the video gamer mentality removed a lot of what airsoft was meant to be...

A honour sport, amungst friends... People didnt try to win simply to win, it was for the fun of playing and feeling involved... escapism. The gaming culture's impact on airsoft removed a lot of that honour, and friendlyness, and fostered the whole WIN WIN WIN attitude that has made airsoft a little stale.

Personally, ive nearly completely dropped out of playing sunday airsoft games... they bore me. I nearly exlusively play milsim and weekend games, for that taste of what airsoft was. I don't want to simply win, or translate my favourite video game to real life. I play to enjoy the experience, to chat and enjoy spending time with people who like the same things. The story driven games are by far my favourite, and interesting objectives that require more cunning than killing everyone in a different coloured arm band to me, are the bread and butter of the sport.

We need to remember where airsoft came from. That will bring more new players in... We dont need to emulate another hobby to be sucessful, Airsoft already has its attractive elements, we just need to draw them out oncemore and recover the community spirit it once had.

Sorry for going on, I'll stop acting like an old biddy and get back in my box :)

    first...What a speech :D

I do know what you're saying, and I'll admit, I think I've explained this AWFULLY :( and I apologize.
We are making a story to use, we're hoping players will act as characters for it, and the games we're using progress the story. The games and movie(And of coarse you can use TV, Stargate sg-1 outfit would be cool :D ) relations is just really to attract players and to help with the story and the idea of using COD idea's is to help players relate to it to help them get more into the story.

As I said, I did a AWFUL job of explaining this :o
We actually have the bones of a story set up, if people are interested I could post it here and see what people think?

@Anari: As above, my bad with the explanation, and we're going to be advertising this a few ways ONCE It's official. We plan to advertise in our school, we're hoping some players can mention it at a site (HINT ;) ) and facebook, but thanks for the suggestions :)

@captaindanWaldo: To be honest, I think 3 teams would be 2 much. At the most we might have teams split up but 3 teams would be hectic I think
And as for No Russian, Fun? Possibly. Possible? Unlikey :( , It'd be fun for some but I'm not sure for others

Considering the fact that Airsoft and games related to war is based on the same subject I can't see it changin' much more as most airsoft sites play these scenario already. Redbarn held a 3 teams gig during... december i think which was my first 3 teams game.

Some of the games you guys are discribing sounds like it's designed for the "good guys" to have heaps of fun while the "bad guys" just havto to be pawns for your enjoyment lol!

As Inari said, i think it would probably be more advertising based.

Although I'd love to hear your ideas!

yeah, needs a LOT of work :D To be honest, This will be our first event organised so *fingers crossed * :D and to be honestier(I know) We wouldn't do a 3 team cause it's our first one
With the teams, I think what we might either set it up so that there's LESS on team A but they go for objectives while B has more and is basically hunting A we'd simply switch games so that each get an equal share of being goodies and baddies
As for advertising, I'm gonna get some stuff.
I'll post some of the ideas we have soon enough, just need to get one or 2 things right bout them :D

    12-17?

Whatever the site min age is up, we're aiming it at younger players for 2 reasons, 1: We think that some milsim's can be...more serious in a way that new/young players can feel, not intimadated, but maybe not sure about going, whereas the aim of this is to let young/new players try a milsim type game and get a feel for what its like (also, to allow newer players to see what different kit is like)

I'm going to try get the flier/poster up tonight to see what people think

Right, well 1st off, great feedback :) thanks a million guys, it's been very helpful and it says alot about airsofters in general too :)

Now, as for the event, We've now:
1: Have a story, it's basic and will be more detailed but we have one
2nd: Used a poster generator to make the posters :D These are simple ones so I'll post them up and tell us what you think(they use game/movie images, let us know if you think actually airsofter images would be better)
3rd: It's not strictly younger players now. We originally thought the whole game/movie thing wouldn't interest players but considering the feedback, and taking particular points about theme games(thanks to Firekitten in particular for his rant :P ;) ) We're gonna encourage the the game/movie/tv (GMT) Tie ins still but just make sure there's a story rather than games in order.
Thanks again for the feedback :)

In my honest opinion, the slogan is not great. Its unoriginal, unengaging and simply horrible. Also the Date, Price and Time up top looks bluured/too dark on the poster.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,152 ✭✭✭Inari

Whereas I commend your enthusiasm, I have to say...there's a reason people and companies spend so much money on design departments...because it's important.

Remember that you are targeting new players, and first impressions are important. This is not something you want to skimp on. If you do not have A) the skills, or B) the pockets to generate a professional grade poster, then I strongly recommend finding someone who does. If you're lucky then they'll do it as a favour for you.

Also, to be the harsh skeptic...if 120 people show up, all new, how can they all be the heroes? Every story needs grunts and sidekicks, and unsung 'heroes'.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 412 ✭✭Harveey

I agree with Ste on this one, the poster needs alot more work, you need it to be eye catching and appealing, for first try its not bad. Try using something like photoshop and provide a bit more information on the poster aswell.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 141 ✭✭Christian.Kelly

Took it down to save my pride :o what littles left :D:rolleyes:

@ MAGIC: I know what you mean with the slogan, it was something we didnt put much thought into :( Needs work done on it put I have a bit of spare time anyway now so we'll come up with something :D

@Inari: Be as harsh as you want (Just not too critical :o ) If its criticism that'll improve it, unleash hell ;)
On Friday I'll have access to better applications to make a better poster. And I'm going to see if certain people can help me out, they're mates so price shouldn't be a problem (Just put 'em on the Christmas card list :D )

@ Harveey: We havn't confirmed anything yet so we couldnt put on details as such. We should of included game info/story but thats my bad :(
I'm going to experiment(Evil laugh :D) with photoshop and see what we can try but I'm not certain when we'll have it done.
