:pac: I am on Jobseekers Benefit which will expire in July and then I will be entitled to apply for Jobseekers Allowance. Does anybody know whether I have to provide bank statements or whether the Inspector doing the means test gets me to sign a form to send to the bank? I heard somewhere they want three months of bank statements and as I don't get bank statements in the post I would want to start getting the bank to send me some. Also if they do send a form to the bank what is the wording and I presume I will have to sign it authorising the bank to give out my details?

Just say you have no savings, they can't get your details from the bank.

You will have to supply some bank statements.

Actually you are mis-informed sw can get statements from bank. If you do not provide bank statements your claim will be closed.

As an aside you are encouraging sw fraud.

You will need to provide bank statements. Wait until you are being assessed until the sw inspector asks for them as they may need the last 3 months, last 6 months or last 12 months it depends on what the Inspector requests. You can have €20,000 capital before it affects you means for JSA.

Really, can you elaborate on that?. So someone with 20k in their account receives the same as someone with a fiver in their account, all other things being equal?.

Many thanks for your information folks and sorry for the delay in replying as when I went to log back in my password wouldn't work for some reason and I had to request new ones several times before being successful.

I don't intend defrauding Social Welfare, just wondering if I provided bank statements along with my application, would the process be speeded up rather than submitting the application, waiting for the Inspector to call and further delay the application by requesting account information at that stage.

Does anybody else feel that where means testing is involved, there is no incentive to save in this country? I am in my late forties, and just CANNOT get work despite being highly experienced and having training in several different areas. I have worked since I left school and always saved so that I wouldn't have to depend on either my friends, family or the social welfare system into my old age. My nest egg was to be for when I retire as I had a pension from a previous job which is now worth nothing. But now my savings will go against me and signifantly reduce my jobseekers allowance which I just will not be able to manage on. Forgive me for being cynical, but I am inclined to say to young people - spend the money when you have it, forget about saving for your future because if you have nothing, the state will help you if you can't get work or even don't want to work.

If and when your savings go below €20,000 you can ask for your means to be reviewed.

You pension from a previous job will also be considered for your means test.

    (1) you need the latest 3 months bank statements
    (2) latest 3 months wage slips
    (3) any savings you have you must give them a letter detailing amounts
    (4) if your under 26 on jan 2011 you need to provide parents income etc if you live at home and you must declare if anyone else is living witn you etc
    (5) if like me your older than 26....im living at home but didnt have to declare my mother cuz im 2 old at this stage (26 is real old...lol!!) and i applied to JSA but i ended up gettin JSB again instead because ive had more of a loss in my earnings!!!!

Sorry for thread stealing but i was means tested last week after my situation has changed with my OH working and i have gone from a survivable E171 to a not so pleasant get me the hell out of here E32 .

Things were tight as it is but i don't want to go about it too much but is there a way i can get that amount increased by doing a course or the likes?

I am over 2 years unemployed and on JSA.

Hi Gregsor, I think you may be entitled to work on a Community Employment Scheme (CE Scheme). You can apply if you have been unemployed and on benefit for in excess of one year. Not certain though if your means test will affect it, maybe somebody else could help?

Your OH could apply for FIS (Family Income Supplement)

You will have to supply a recent payslip from your partner.

Is there any truth to the story that as part of the means test assessment the inspector can visit your home and take note of things like the car in the driveway ?
I've heard this but suspect it may be an urban myth

It's common practice for a few years now for an inspector to call to your home when you apply for any means tested payment. They will have your application and will ask you questions regarding the information you have already supplied. The purpose of the visit is to check that everything is as you said it was with regard to the information you gave re yourself, your address, living arrangements etc.

When you apply for a means-tested payment, a Social Welfare Inspector will ask for details of your means. The Inspector may do this at your local Social Welfare Office or may call to you at your home. The Inspector will need to ask you for details about the items that count as means.

whats the minimum JSA 40 euro??

i live at home but have no income whatsoever my parents give me food and bed to sleep on. i think my parents make to much for me to get JSA but am i still entitled to the 40 euro?

    Introduction
When you apply for Jobseeker's Allowance, your means is assessed to find out whether you will qualify. If you are 24 years of age or under and you are living with a parent or a step-parent in the family home, your parents' income is also taken into account. The Department of Social Protection call this an assessment of the benefit and privilege you get from living with your parents.

This means, while you may have no income, your parents' income can affect the amount of your social welfare payment. If however your only means are from the benefit of your parents' income and those means are calculated as less than the personal rate of Jobseeker's Allowance, the minimum weekly payment you are entitled to is €40.

so if its less than 40 im not entitled to anthing or do i get the 40 euro?

ive no money at all my parents wouldn't give me a Fiver without askin 100 questions whats it for

In plain English if your means from Benefit & Privilege e.g your parents income are over the personal rate of Jobseekers Allowance you will get nothing.

What is wrong with working through FAS?

I registered with them last week and hope to start a CE Scheme with them which will get me motivated for 20 hours a week and put over E220 in my pocket instead of the ripe sum of E32.60 i just collected today

You can always sit on your arse* like i did for 2 years and moan though ;).

*I wasn't literally sitting on my arse just a figure of speech alot of folk like to describe people who are unemployed particularly longterm ;)

well i would ask you what people going to FAS (living at home) need 200 euro a week for?
200 euro to spend on what? if i go to fas i wont be entitled to this 188/200 euro not even a euro of it. while other friends who live in the same estate as me can go to FAS and get 200 euro a week.
my mate already has a grand  saved up from this.

hardly seems fair that im left with an empty wallet everyday of every week while he can flash 50's in my face like its nothing.

The logic behind the difference is that the State considers that you can be supported by your parents. If you were not living at home, you would not be subject to Benefit and Privelege rules. Your parents have to be making a fair bit (more than 600 net a week after mortgage repayments are deducted) before your lose any of your JA payment.

aye of course but all my friends that get it, there parents can and always could support them before they were 18. i'm just saying its extremely unfair to me. its only because of a pension my dad gets that i cant get any JSA
