So i have been on welfare now for 2 years.Yesterday i forgot completely to sign on 1st time in 2 years.I was down first thing this morning to say sorry i forgot to sign on yesterday.

Went to counter and explained i simply forgot.Woman behind counter went off on one about having to sign on on the dates requested.I again said sorry
off she went to get my file

Then she says i'm giving you a warning miss a signing date again and i'll have you on weekly signings.

Ok i said again i'm sorry.

So she hand's me the page to sign and wrote down on the page Claimant has been put on warning for weekly signings.

I think this is a bit excessive to be honest.

Anyone else experienced this off the staff in the social welfare office.

It really depends on the sw office and who you deal with. In ours its 3 strikes and your signing weekly for a few months. IMO this was a wee bit excessive if it is your first time being late signing.

You could complain about the treatment you received.

Depending on what reason you had and how you were both acting (seems she was somewhat rude and you were apologetic), you could and probably should make a formal complaint. While yes, you shouldn't have missed it. The fact you got down the next day and explained the situation shows you wanted to fix it. I would try to make a complaint or talk to someone else in the office about it; it seems like you just got someone who was in a bad mood.

There's a thing called "late signing", I'm not sure if it's done still, though.
Basically, a few years ago I missed it and had to come in two days later and sign on.
The other day I missed it and was told to come back tomorrow, I queued up and the girl just told me to sign on and that was it.

I don't think you should be punished for one person's bad day and it sounds like that's what happened.

i know a guy who missed signing for 5 months, one of those months was the christmas break, he went up, signed all 5 lines and not a word was said to him. i've also missed signing by a couple of weeks (genuine emergency, spend most of my time in hospital) and i went up with a big spiel planned and had forms and proof i was at the hospital, guy behind the counter just went 'what's yer name''blah''here you go, this day next week so' and said nothing.

you'd wanna lodge a formal complaint with either the manager of the office where you collect or the main social welfare offices. some people that work there (not all, not most, not even close to the majority, a very small minority) think that because were on the dole we're lazy, thieving, scumbags and that they're better than you because they have a job and you don't, forgetting that they only have a job because 1 they got a government job and nothing they do is **** enough to get them fired and 2 because you and i collect the dole. but like anyone else, she has rules she has to follow and she doesn't have the right to speak to you like that.

as you can tell i complained about someone working in a social welfare office before :P i never heard what happened and i got dirty looks from her every time i went in there but she was polite when she spoke to me from then on.

i will end with the vast majority of people i've had dealings with in the social welfare office have been nice, polite and genuinely helpful. its just a few who are either spiteful because they have to work or look down on people because they can't find a job. the more people that complain the sooner they'll realize we have a right to be treated with dignity and respect irrespective of any other issues involved.

Going back a few years now, but once I had to sign on everyday for a month between 9:30 and 10:30 because of missing a signing date so I say take it on the chin and be on time from now on.

So let me get this straight...

You've been on the dole for 2 years. All you have to do to claim this is sign on once a month. You "forgot" to do the only thing that's needed to get your dole and are thinking of complaining about the girl begind the counter because you got a warning????

Are you off your head or what? Cop the f*ck onto yourself lad.

What do you think would happen if I didn't go to work Monday and told my boss i "forgot" to come in?

I know there's thousands of people in the country who have no option but to sign on due to the economic mess we're in and have nothing but sympathy for them. But when I hear things like this it really gets to me.

There's a few of my friends on the dole. I honestly don't think they'd forget to do the only thing they have to do in a MONTH to make sure they got money to pay the bills.

So, instead of holding your hands up and admitting you were wrong, you want to jeapordise this persons job with a flippant complaint? She's probably dealing with people's genuine excuses all day (wasn't well, was away, child was sick etc) and in walk you with your "I forgot". I know what I'd have told you mate "go f*ck yourself, no dole this month you stupid pr*ck". Wouldn't be forgetting next time then would you?

    End of rant.

Conky, you would want to cop yourself on a bit, or you won't be long on this site. Read the forum and site rules before posting again.

I used to get a sign on slip and I just dropped it in the post box at the SW office. Never had any issues with that.

you think it's funny that my girlfriend had a miscarriage, nearly died and as a result i spent most of two months in hospital? i would call that an understandable set of circumstances to forget signing on wouldn't you? well i'm glad my pain amuses you.
