among us here? Male of course.

So I will be racing in Austria in about 6 weeks and something has struck me. Will all the tanned metro sexual europeans point and laugh at my pasty hairy legs? Or will my gut be enough to keep them amused?

Do many people on here wax/shave their legs? Or is it just for those pretty boys over in cycling.

Cannot bring myself to shaving the legs although if i ever have a big spill off the bike and cut myself to shreds i may reconsider.

My brother is more a cyclist than a runner and shaves the legs, but he say's he does it as he likes the feel of his smooth girly legs against the material of his trousers.

i dont do it and wont until such time that i have a bad crash that forces me to.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,724 ✭✭✭kennyb3

Did it the weekend after a crash the weekend prior.

(I got that the wrong way around for sure).

I doubt you need to though unless your doing some cycle races. Best to do it in advance though dont wait for a crash like me - very messy.

Now its done, i dont see myself going back :)

    To clarify..

I am talking purely aesthetics here... hairy legs look ugly ;)

I would suggest dyeing your legs Mloc to a more discreet color, its the best of both worlds no pain of waxing and you still get to keep your manly bristle which will stand to you in the winter months ;)

I wouldnt worry about the Europeans though - there will be plenty of hairy armpits over there and I am only talking about the women

Aesthetics are important but scientific research has proven that shaved legs will improve your wattage by 0.02%***

Last tri I did everyone got a body shaver in the race pack

    This one: http://wilkinsonsword.co.uk/men/showroom/quattro_titanium_body

They gave a strict warning that next year any body hair would lead to immediate DQ

Come on now, given this is the ART forum we must be referring to triathletes here when it comes to leg shaving. And we all know a fall off a bike attached to a turbo is unlikely to end in serious road rash so that's no reason to shave.

Purely a guess but id say atleast 90% + athletes in the olympics shave their legs !!!
One of the big reasons is massage, ever get a massage with hairy legs(its not fun)
For cyclists or triathletes if they crash its not good with hairy legs

Purely a guess but I'd say 99.99% of those contributing to ART are not olympians, if we're to use that as a basis for shaving or not! I have had massage on my hairy legs, massage hurts, the contribution to that pain of a few pulled hairs I will happily deal with.

Getting back to the OP, it should be left to the cyclists.

At least that's what I think as a hairy ultra runner(feel free to link to the hilarious triathlete Vs ultrarunner vids at any time).

The Brownlee brother don't shave their legs and they're the fastest triathletes.

So we can conclude that leg shaving slows you down.

    That's the power of logic.

They are about 11 and haven't a pube between them

Plus they were the fastest in the years that didn't really affect olympic qualification. See how they do this year. I think not as well.

What about oil for massaging hairy legs? That's always worked for me. Or is that only for wusses as well?

Depends how hairy you are and how much of your legs are getting massaged.

I ve had physios dig their elbows into my hamstring and pull downwards tearing hairs out even with oil.

Ouch! I have had a few "white knuckle" experiences myself, but nothing quite that bad .

Do shaved legs really make a difference for running? Sprinting/distance/marathons etc

Shaved legs make no physical difference to aerodynamics or speed at all, whether for cycling or running. Might make some difference for swimming (shaving whole body).

Whether or not the make a psychological difference depends on the person themselves.

Whatever people say, the most common reason they shave their legs is because everybody else does- not for crashes or massage or aero effects or whatever.
