Ubuntu and screen resolution issue

I have a laptop which I have stuck a new sata drive into.
I have a few Ubuntu live/install disks which all are usable and installable if need be - however they will only go up to the resolution of 600x800.

Does anyone know of a tweaked/altered version of Ubuntu and includes better graphic drivers that allow higher resolutions?

The versions I have and tried are Ubuntu, Xbuntu & Kbuntu.
I have other versions of Linux systems but so far have only come across two (openSUSE 11.4 & Peppermint Linux) that offer what I'm seeking - however they are not Ubuntu based and as such their software manager does not include a a lot of the software that usually is found in a Ubuntu type set-up.

    Help?

Once you have the right driver all hardware supported resolutions will be available. The only difference between Ubuntu/Kubuntu and Xubuntu is the desktop environment - they all use the same kernel and drivers so a driver that works for one will work for all.

What make and model is the laptop? With that info we can find the model of the gfx card and hopefully the driver you need.

You could try doing an apt-get install ubuntu-restricted-extras which does install some proprietary drivers - that might sort it.

Its a Dixon shop make and I'm still looking for an actual name for this model.
The computer is telling me it has a 771/671 PCIE vga display adapter - just no drivers for it with Ubuntu.

Thanks, will try that and let you know how I got on. :)

Edit: Looks very complicated. Nubie to Linux here.

Downloaded the file suggested, tried to copy/paste it to the stated location and Ubuntu won't let me.
Read the page 38 as suggested for supposed instructions how to copy it over - and I'm now ten times as confused.

    Help?

open the terminal open gedit as root
    sudo gedit

now browse to location you wanted to copy paste to...

also have you clicked on the additional drivers in the admin menu ?

It became a major pain to try and do the above.
I did some research then and came across "Fedora 14"
Between the switchable fronts of KDE and Gnome (you can chose which one you want at each login) - both provided me with better resolution as soon as it was installed.
